Normal temp?

1991 olds cutlass ciera 3.3l 4spd

I have a 195 degree thermostat that i put in a year ago. Since I bought the car 2 years ago normal temp is at 160 (before and after new thermostat). It will reach the middle line (220 degrees) If I'm stuck in traffic but then the fan comes on and goes down.

Is this normal or am i missing something?

My experance with this is I coulden't trust what I was seeing on the guage. I pulled the guage sensor and placed it in boiling water and checked with a OHM meter, there is a scale to go by just do some searching . 220 is not to hot, but I think 160 is low, what kind of gauge do you have ? Maybe take the cap off and get thermometer in there. If you have owners manuel I think theres info in there.

I have the gauge that goes 100 to 280. 220 in the middle. The needle stays at the quarter mark while driving (which is 160?). I'm wondering what that quarter mark temp really is since it doesn't say. I assumed it was half way from 100-220. But if the quarter mark was 190 and the rest 30 degree increments would make sense.
