I've had good luck with naphtha (lighter fluid) removing various kinds of adhesive, including old weatherstrip gunk, without damaging paint (old GM 'Magic Mirror' laquer, in particular; haven't tried it on '90s-and-up paints, though---you may want to try it in an 'inconspicuous location' first). A downside is, it evaporates quickly and has to be repeatedly applied, but you won't have to worry about where the hot nozzle of the hot-air gun is put down.

3M makes a rubber wheel that fits into your drill chuck for removing vinyl pinstriping (called a Stripe Off Wheel). Costs about $25, but it works slick and fast with no damage to the paint. I've leaned on it good to get some real old striping off and it still came off clean.
