1999 Malibu stalling out with codes.

I have a 1999 Malibu 3.1 vin M.. Sometimes when it starts up, it stalls and dies. I start is back up and runs perfectly as long as I am driving on the interstate. As soon as I stop, it dies. After that, it stumbles and will not go again until it sits for several hours. If it does go, it's for no more than half a mile or so, then stalls. It sounded to me like it could be a fuel problem. I checked fuel pressure and it holds a steady 40psi. Even after sitting overnight, it still holds 40 before turning key on. It is now throwing a P0706 (Trans Range Sensor CKT Range/Perf) code. This is an intermittent problem so it is hard to diagnose. I have a scanner and while problem is happening all data seems normal. It does throw a cam code every now and then. If anyone has had this sort of problem before, any push in the right direction would be appreciated.

It only has problems after I stop, and then try to go again.

I forgot to mention. My exaust now has a gurgle to it. And seems hotter than normal. The cat isn't glowing or anything.

Have access to a scanner to test out parts? Sounds like your EGR valve is sticking open or slow to respond to command.

I should have posted this earlier. The EGR valve had stuck open a few years back and since being a non vital function of the engine, I blocked it off with a coke can. Well, I never would have thought of it, but some of my problem was that it had blown a hole in my can. I installed a new can in its place and that didn't solve my problems all the way. I have a Matco scanner. I looked at the frquency of the MAF and it was 1000mhz to high at idle, cleaned it with no improvement. I replaced it, now it is functioning correctly withing range. Still had a little hesitation so I pulled the plug wires from the coil pack just to have a peek. Just as I suspected there was lots of rust. With 150,000 and 11 years on the coil packs, I feel safe replacing them without feeling as I wasted my money. I noticed that the plug wires were original also they they will be replaced also. With all of that, I took the car for a trip around town. Put about 100 miles on it without any problems whatsoever. The car had several problems mostly from lack of maintenance and age. Works fine now.
Jyount, Thanks for the reply and good call on the EGR, that was a good part of the problem, I just overlooked it because I had previously blocked it off. My scanner shows it is open about 28 percent all the time. I generally wouldn't suggest blocking off an EGR valve with a coke can, but it does make a good diagnostic tool. This time I wont be so lazy to forget it and not replace it.
