97 Silverado will not start

I went on a first date last Sunday. We went to a nice resturant about 50 miles up the road which is farther than I normally take my truck. When we got back to her house I shut it off and walked her to her door, said my goodbyes and attempted to go home but the truck wouldn't start. It turned over just fine but no start. I left it there and got a ride home from my date.

My Dad got my keys the next morning and went to look at it while I was at work. It started fine for him and he drove it 8 miles home with no problem. When I got home from work it would'nt start again.

I checked the fuses and looked at the relay, no coroded or burnt. I changed the fuel filter and checked for spark. Does have spark.

It's a 97 with a 305 and about 120k miles on it.

I want to rule out easier things to fix before I pull out the fuel pump and would apriciate any sugestions. Tommorrow I plan to get a new relay and maybe check to see if the injector nozzles spray, and to hear if the pump comes on at the first click of the key.

I'm thinking it starting the next day for my Dad is a clue but to what I don't know.

Thanks in advance

You are welcome.
And welcome on your first post.

On the no start you will need to test it out when a no start mode.
First thing is the starter is cranking engine good?
Check for good spark to more than one spark plug.
If good spark put a fuel pressure gauge on it and check fuel pressure when no start.
It needs arount 65 lbs of fuel pressure key on 2 second prime up and engine cranking.
If good spark and fuel pressure check for injector pulse to injectors.
Any check engine or security lights and or engine codes?
Post back on spark and fuel pressure and injector pulse and security light or check engine lights and code.

Extra notes.
97 has 2 different injector systems.
CSI pressure spec is 60-66 lbs. needs 65 engine cranking.
SFI system is 56-62 pressure specs needs 60-61 lbs. engine cranking.
OEM shows no security system but it may have a add on system that is prone to problems.
Most anti theft systems shut down starter cranking or injector pulse.
To check for lose of injector pulse you need a good scanner or a injector node light.

My truck is doing this also SO I have a 1998 z71 with 289k all original drivetrain miles and it has been fine until now. Sometimes it will crank up and run fine, other times it will crank and run for a second then die, and sometimes it will not crank at all. It was throwing a po304 cylinder 4 misfire and a po300 multi cylinder misfire code, sometimes it runs rough when you crank it up, but typically when its warmed up it runs super smooth, I replaced the fuel filter and it was really dirty. When it does not crank you can tap on the fuel tank and it will start, so im thinking it is the fuel pump, I just wanted some other opinions before I throw down the dinero please help us!!!!!!

If you need help on yours it is best to start a new thread/post.
It sound like you could have two problems.
Or fuel pressure problem is also causing engine miss .

First tyhing run a full fuel pressure test.

The only true test on a fuel pump is to check the direct fuel pressure from fuel pump.
A quick test is to block off the return line and see if fuel pressure comes up to 75-85 lbs.
But do not run the pump at full pressure very long.
Also when testing fuel pump and pressure you need to tape a gauge to outside windshield or outside mirror and drive it on the road for 20 -30 minutes
until the pump gets has run a while to check for a pump fading out after hot.

Hard to start cold or hot and fuel pressure testing guide lines.
Check cold start fuel pressure.
Check engine running fuel pressure.
Check engine running on the road fuel pressure.
Then shut it off and watch for fast leak down.
Pinch off at rubber part or block off return line and check full pressure.
If pump has full pressure with return line blocked and low pressure without it blocked most usually the fuel pressure regulator is leaking or not holding pressure.
Later V6 and V8 gm engines should have 60-66 fuel pressure.
Cold start should be 64-65 lbs of pressure.
If you do not have full fuel pressure on a cold start the injectors will not squirt fuel.
Do not leave home without it.
Engine running should be 60-66 lbs pressure depending on engine load.
Full pressure with return pinched off should be 75-85 or more.
And if it has a fast leak down after shut off you have a leak in system.
Post back fuel pressure readings.

Try a simple test....Once you get a no start issue open your hood and wiggle your fuel pump relay. It has been known to get corroded or burn out.
