Ford could sell Volvo because of the bad results of the PAG (Premier Automotive Group with Jaguar, Land Rover, Aston Martin and Volvo).
Renault would be interested and it'd be a new challenge for Carlos Gohsn who has already saved Nissan (two years in advance !). Volvo is little beside Nissan, so it's quite realistic.
There has already been a partnership between Volvo and Renault for the engines.

Renault and Volvo already discussed a merger about a decade ago. It fell through.
After Ford bought Volvo Car, Volvo AB (the truck side) bought Renault VI (Renault's truck side).
After Ford bought Volvo Car, Volvo AB (the truck side) bought Renault VI (Renault's truck side).

Volvo Truck bought Renault VI (Renault Trucks, Mack, etc.)... versus 20% of the capital of Volvo Trucks for Renault. ;)
