A lady at my wifes work called me about 2 weeks ago and wanted me to tel her how much I would charge her to put a alternator on her 02 beetle turbo s 1.8L I gave her a nice price. I guess she decided her boyfriend could put it on. So they went to autozone and ordered the reman alternator and I guess put it on. Then two days later she drove the car to work and when time to leave the car would not start. She had someone try to jump her as soon as they unhook the jumper cables it would die. So left it at her work and the next day I went and towed it to my house to fix it. I got it home charged the battery and started the car and checked alternator and not charging. I pulled the alternator took it back to autozone and they tested it and it failed. So they had to order me a different one to put on it. All this time I have called vw with the vin and they could only tell me that it was 120 amp and there were three different brands and had to have the original to tell which one. Autozone has sent the core back already and can not get it back. So can't see the original one. Well I installed the new alternator from autozone which says the different brands are all inerchangable. I get it on start the car and it is charging so figured okay. I reached down to the belt tensior and noticed the belt sticks off the side of it by 3/8 of a inch and really start to look and looks like the alternator pully is about that far sticking out past everything else. So Know I figure that the pulley is the difference. I tell her I am not sure what to do and stuck in the middle. She calls a different vw store the tell her they have a alternator from that vin and it is 525.00. Itold her to go buy it then if you think it is right. I called that dealer and had him go get it and measure it and see if it would work. He said it doesn't come with a pulley have to use the old one. Great autozone sent it back and don't have it. So I had him look up pulleys and he can order two different ones nobody stocks them. He has to see the factory one to order one they don't tell the measurements.
So know I am all confused and not sure were to go from here but tell her I am sorry you really messed up doing it yourself. Any advice

Okay I figured it out they took the belt tensior off and when they boltedit back on they bolted a hose bracket on the wrong side of the belt tensior which had it at a angle causing it to do that to the belt. The alternator and everything were in line know using a straight edge.
