I have a 99 Ford F250, 5.4 litre 4X4 and this evening, the engine decided to eject the number four spark plug. Meaning it ripped the threads out of the head. I managed to catch my mechanic before they closed and was told, this is a known issue.

To make matters worse, I live in the middle of nowhere and and will now have to make arrangements to have it towed 100klm, 60 miles. My shop told me they did not have the tool to insert a heli-coil but told me where I could take it....

I am really beginning to hate my Ford.....

The heads must be cool when replacing spark plugs, they canbe easly cross threaded.

When, and how many miles ago was the plugs replaced?

Could you of disconnected the injector wire and ignition wire to cylinder 4, and drove home.

Not sure as I purchased this truck just under a year ago. A deer decided it was time I replaced what I was driving before and was in need of a 4X4 fast. The plug it ejected looked pretty good ala a visual inspection.

Luckily it happened but a few blocks from home. It is resting comfortably in my driveway hoping I can't find my gun....

I'm pretty sure they have a helicoil kit that you can repair it with.

With the 5.4 this is a very common problem. If you are mechanically inclined. You can do this repair yourself. It is fairly simple and pretty straight forward. They sale the kit and tool at your local auto parts store. I believe it can cost 60 to 100 dollars and about 2 hours of your time. You need to rethread the plug whole and then insert the coil and tap it a few times with a hammer and there you go. All done.
