Can it be done? My friend wants to keep his rear planted - if you know what I mean! He wants the FRONT of the car to get to his destination first, even if he is leadfooted.

Stick with the solid rear. Independent rear is better for handling, solid rear tends to be better at launching. Plus, the unibody/subframe construction of those F-bodies is not designed for a stressed third member. You would be placing a ton of torsional load on the rear chassis of a car that is designed to simply suspend weight.
