Rear main seal

Need to install a rear main seal in a '97 2.2. Motor is out of car and on an engine stand. Is there a "correct" method of installing the seal? I could install the rear main cap, then drive in the seal, or, I could raise the crankshaft slightly, install the seal over the crank, lower the crank, then install the main cap.
Also, I have seen two different versions of this seal.
One appears to have a metal outer ring and rubber inner, and one appears to have rubber on the inside and outside. Is any one superior to the other?
Thanks,
Ray
