2001 intrepid shifter problem

I am trying to help out a friend. His shifter cable came off and is real hard to take out of gear. Im not sure if it is the cable that is bad or not. If i get under the car i can get it back into park by the linkage on the trans then it is hard to move into any gears and wont go back into park or any other gears once it is moved out of park. Any ideas i can try?
