applications of different suspension set ups

aright, so i'm finally getting a new suspension this summer. i searched the forums yesterday for every topic dealing with coilover sleeves vs coilovers vs springs...and its pretty crazy out there! a friend of mine told me that coilovers are more adjustable overall BUT you have to adjust them prior to each surface that you're going to be driving/racing on - making them perfect for actual racing, GT, whatever. he also said that with a good set of springs/shocks (by shocks i mean like...koni yellows. misconceptions throw everything off) you'll get better average performance in any area. my goal is GT style mods. with this car i would never spend the amount to make a true GT car, but thats the direction i'm going. so...lots of hard turns, random drag-like straightaways, and eventually i want to eliminate most of the understeer. and this car is a daily driver, so i have to consider the harshness of the ride around town (eliminating true coilovers from what i hear?).
so i guess my question is, what are the application differences between springs/dampers, coilover sleeves, and coilovers? after reading everything i still havent gotten a clear answer to that. thanks

I have Tein SS coilovers (on my 90 Civic) and they ride great. But it depends on how it is adjusted. If you have the car slammed all the way down, the ride will be harsh.
The adjustable shock setting also makes a big difference. For my daily driving, I have it set on soft and it feels like my old stock shocks.

coil-overs are coil springs on struts with a threaded collar to adjust the amount of stiffness & lowering. A good set of coil-overs starts $800. If you do not plan on using to the full potential they are over kill & you feel it in the ride. Dont try to save money here
Damper, Shocks, Struts are all basically the same thing. With out these your springs would continue bouncing after a bump. Also the shocks are what mantain contact to the road surface not the spings
for street use a good set of spings & shocks should be fine.
Add or increase the size of the rear sway bar to reduce under-steer then you induce over-steer(snap-steer)
