??? about Turbo's??

I really don't know much about turbo's so can someone please tell me: Can you use a turbo off of another car, non Honda? Reason being, I got a car here that I am giving to charity and it is turboed. It is a Merkur Xr4ti. Just wondering because I come across turboed cars all the time.

Yeah I know Honda doesn't make turbo cars. When I said non-honda, I meant not using one from someone that had turbo on a honda. Can you use ones off of cars that came stock with turbo like my Merkeur Xr4ti? If so how would you go about it? I think that it is a T4. I am not really sure what kind it is. I have to get that info.

All you need to do is get a turbo manifold designated for that particular class of turbo, as the exhaust flange is usually different from turbo to turbo. You can go the homemade route and use the manifold from a CRX HF, but you have to weld an adapter plate so the turbo bolts up.

You can use this principle for any car with any turbocharger, you just have to be willing to fabricate some parts to get it to bolt on.

if i were u i'd be taking that turbo off, before i gave the car away, along with the turbo, you should take the intercooler if its got one, and the downpipe. i know these items wont fit up to your honda, but with a little fabrication, you can make them work.

can I just say let it go. First of all, the T4 would be WAY too big for the honda, but I doubt it is a T4. Secondly, the car basically won't run w/o the turbo. If you are giving it to charity, don't fuck it up, someone in need will enjoy the car as a source of transportation.
Seriously, if you wanna go turbo on the lude, buy a kit. I know this sounds cheesy but the companies that sell turbo kits have done the research, blown THEIR motors, and sell the kits at what it would take for you to build a reliable setup in the longrun.
I know this sounds pescimistic but this is what I would do. I've gotten burned too many times trying to take the cheap way out. you get what you pay for.

You can donate cars to charity whether they run or not. It is a tax write off, and seeing that the transmission is stuck in 3rd, it isn't running anyway. That is one of the reasons I am donating it. Another reason is that I am moving and we are getting rid of some cars. (Had 9, down to 7) Thanks for the info though. I don't know if I'm gonna take it off or not. I was just wondering if people did that or not because like I said we come across all kinds of turbo'd cars from auctions. Oh yeah it wasn't gonna be for the lude.:)

I found out that it is a Garrett(sp?) T3 turbo. Is that too big for a honda also?

if im right, im thinkin that the turbo on there is a 60-1 t3, which is a good turbo to have...if its in decent shape you can sell it for decent cash too

Thats a big turbo....and yes its a t4.

I've repaired and sold a few of those...what a pain to get out of the donor car. I would say yea, keep the turbo, intercooler and piping.

I wouldnt use that specific turbo on a honda, just a little too big. From what I understand, the best model turbo to use for a "ghetto turbo" setup is the 1st gen Dsm's...(eclipse,talon,laser). Those are t25 turbo's and have an internal wastegate set at 7psi. Those turbo's spool up very quickly, and are perfect for smaller displacement motors. The Xr4ti turbo would take days to spool up on a 4cyl honda motor.

If you're still in the dark on the "how-to" aspect of what its going to take, check out homemadeturbo.com. Lots of good info, helpful tips and some funny stuff too. If anything, you will come away with a better understanding of whats involved in going turbo.


My only advice is to not take the cheap route. You can do the homemade setup, but take the time and do it right. My advice would be to get whatever turbo you decide to use, rebuilt before you install it. Also, Fuel management is key in turbo, do you're reasearch to find whats the best setup for your car.

And don't get too cute with pushing the boost!!!:rolleyes:
