1994 Grand Cherokee Transmission Problem

I have a 1994 Grand Cherokee Laredo, 4.0 Liter 6 cyl with auto trans with over drive. My problem is when I go above 45 mph I have to back off of the gas pedal to get it to shift up to overdrive. As soon as I push down on the gas pedal it shifts back down to 3rd gear. I took it down the freeway at 60+ mph to see if it would stay in overdrive at freeway speeds and it will not. It will drop in to overdrive at 50+ mph if I back off the gas pedal, but as soon as I accelerate it drops back down to 3rd. I had it up to 3500 rpm and it stayed in 3rd gear. I need this car to run. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You should try asking this in the *GRAND* Cherokee forum.

Sounds like a throttle position sensor issue. Ask the GC guys.

I think the 4.0 had the same engine/trans combo for that year, in both the GC and Cherokee. I'll move this to the GC section for you.

I agree that it could be the TPS, or it could be the "TV Cable" that controls the kickdown to a lower gear. Do a search on TV Cable and there are numerous posts on how to adjust it.

Replaced the throttle position sensor. Seems to be working fine now. Thanks for the replies.:p
