Short Shifters?

Hey guys. I have to do some work on my shifter. I'm going to replace the bushings on the shift rod. I figured since I have to go through all that, I might as well replace the stock shifter with a short shifter. But how much shorter are the throws with a short shifter really? Does anyone have a short shifter? If so, have you noticed any difference in the throw distance between shifts? Thanks for the help.

oh. yes. there's a big difference from a stock shifter to a short shifter. it's worth it.

yea...the stock civic shifter is pretty long, so u'll notice it a LOT closer. personally, i love the shortness of it, but overall, its not really something that helps too much. but hey, its worth it if ur doin all that, i say go for it.

dont spend your money on a name brand short shifter. on things thsat actually have moving parts or things that give you performance then yeah, get good stuff, but alls a short shifetr is is a bar with a hole at the bottom and the pivot ball moved up on the shaft, so anyone can make one of those, just get the 18 dollar one of ebay, works fine. and yeah, it is nice to have, Id say do it too.

Get a Skunk2 Dual Bend w/ Neuspeed bushings!!! excelent combo, but be sure to get the Skunk2 Shift knob, its like 50grams, and its nice and heavy to make every shift so sweet!1!

Well as they say you get what you pay for. I would never buy any of those cheapo deluxe crap off ebay. B&M short-throw shifter is awesome and I know lasts for a long time. I know someone who got a no-name brand $50 dollar one from somewhere and it broke after a weeks use. All Im saying is you dont know what your getting when you buy off a place like ebay. You know what your getting with a brand like B&M, and spending a little extra cash.

it dont matter waht kind of short shifter u get, just make sure its a steel and not an aluminum one, aluminun ones break when shifting hard

I ordered a Skunk2 short shifter (double bend) since it's legal for my class in SCCA Solo II. Very nice and definitely a big improvement over stock, but I also replaced the bushings and I think that was causing my 2nd gear grinding. But throws are like 1" and rifle bolt action aka S2000 shifter.

okay thats why your drive an rs. it does matter who made it, all companys have different ways of manufacturing the product some use different kinds of metal. others like b&m are better then oh lets say dc sports. have you not heard the wise saying you get what you pay for, paying extra will only get you a better product becuse a lot of people have bought them for that priceand the company seems to be making money that way. :finger:

Hi everyone.
Great topic. I'm buying short shifter right now.:D I'm looking over eBay and found some interesting offers. New (packed) REVO, alu short shifter for 23 bucks and some postage - I'm from Europe-Slovenia. So, is the shifter worth it? Or it will just help to crank my gearbox/transmition with it? Thanks for your answers.:smoker2:

Agreed. My friend purchased a short shifter off Ebay. No name company or something like that. We installed it and went out for a run, first shift he broke the thing in half almost punching himself in the face. So you do get what you pay for.

Great info guys. I've decided to go for it, I'll start shopping around for one. I think I'll avoid the cheapo ones because I know all too well you get what you pay for. Thanks again!

another one is a neuspeed short shifter, its really good, good pivot point designed for you car(custom). Plus it comes with bushings for about $120. Crispy as hell.

whatever, if you wanna pay an extra 100 for the same damn thing, go for it. I will admit that some companys shifters throws might be shorter, but the 20 dolar one is a GREAT improvement over stock, very short throws, and it never broke! heres a tip, you dont gotta slam it into the next gear with so much forcem, just do it quick. use some arm control or whatever you do, and shift as fats as you can without trying to push the damn stick into the stereo. like when your loosening a bolt theres the eople who push so damn hard when it loosens they bust their shit ope, and then theres the guy who has control of himself and just breaks it loose. be the 2nd! and "thats why I drive an RS", fuck you, I drove an RS cuz it had PS/PW/PM and personally I dont give a shit about CC,AC, or a moonroof. sure the PDL would have been nice, but whatever. the RS is just as good as a GS, just has less options. and I knpow people with the ebay ones as well, and they are still shifting with them. and on my RS I had DC sports 4-2-1 headers along with other brand name stuff, I know you get what you pay for, but you are paying TOO MUCH for a peice of metal. shit I could have probably made my own damn short shifter with a sawzall and a welder, but it would have took too much time to be worth saving 20 bucks.

hey rs it seems as though everyone agrees to spend a little more money accept you. i also have a friend with a 90 teg RS that snapped his shifter in half after 2 months. it was a shitty no name brand one too. so i say pay the extra money. i have a b16 tranny on my ls/vtec and im fine with the stock shifter. plus ive heard bad things when putting short shifters on EG's with b16 trannies. my friends kept popping out of third. ill just stick with the stock one.

There's no need to be an arrogant punk about it. My friend has been driving Hondas for 20 years. We know how to shift. And no he wasn't shifting hard - I was in the car.

Making your own short shifter is not the same as a real short shifter. I know plenty of people who sawed off the top of the level, not the same.

94tegRS
05-20-2003, 09:22 PM
well, then you got a shitty cheap one, and im not being an arrogant punk, somebody thinks that I drove an RS so I should put cheap shit on it so I was telling him what I thought, he told me what he thought so I had a right to. and alls you would have to do is cut between the pivot ball and the end the linkage bolts to, (in the middle of both) and then go on the lathe, make a round peice the same size about 1/4-1/2 inch or however long you want (depending on how short of a throw you want) and then put them position them together and tack them with a weld, and if it is straight then finish the welds, and you got a short shifter. the welds arent near anything that would cause a problem and it would work. so whatever, I dont even wanna argue anymore, I know that mine is fine, you think that it isnt, so dont worry about it.

LATER!

You assumed that my friend broke his short shifter by slamming on it. That's what I took personally.

And I hate to say you dug your own hole by posting a picture of the ASS altezza taillights. You are going to get slammed :p

you at least like it from the front right? :D

but seriously, people can give me shit about whatever they want, I personally like them on tegs, some civics altezzas look alright, accords and preludes look kinda ugh, neons look DUMB, but IMO tegs altezzas look good. I know there are people who agree with me, and lots of those who dont. but whatever. I bought the car with them, but on my next teg, Im gettin some more.

and i did assume that, cuz even out of the cheapest metal, and cheapest build it should take considerable force to break a 1/2"+ thick peace of metal. but if not then you must have gotten a really shitty one.

i've heard that those $20 ebay short shifters hit the exhaust on some cars too. BTW the front of your car is hideous too, but only because of that huge gap between the headlights, my friend got a Blitz front for his 97 GSR and it has that gap too and just looks plain nasty, he's getting rid of it in favor of something without the gap

sorri guys, but i have to side w/ rs on this one. Tenzo makes CHEAP short shifters, but mine has held up to everything.

"Cheap people have cheap looking cars. You get what you pay for and it shows in performance and looks. What are you even talking about, RS, this is the 92+ Civic forum, we dont know about that crap."

i don't really understand the basis of this. the guy isn't saying for all parts to go the cheap route, but for a short shifter, it really isn't going to matter. yes, u buy a cheap kit, cheap turbo, cheap suspension set-up, ur going to have problems. but for simple things such as intake, short shifter EVEN exhaust, it isn't going to matter that much.

my teg w/ a no name intake an exhaust still puts down the same numbers that a car w/ injen intake an apex-i exhaust would.

ppl put too much emphaisis on the little stickers that come with the big named products...its jus a damned piece of metal guys.

j/w wut him being on the 92+ civic forum has to do w/ anything?

an no, im not being arogant, im simply saying MY view about this topic. if that makes me arrogant, then this thread really does have problems.

For renegade, make sure your shifter doent hit the heat shield. Thats the main problem with cheap shifters for the 92+ civic. Cheap ones are not tested or made custom to the car so theyre less but not fitted correctly, nor is the pivot point at the optimal position.

Drift King
05-21-2003, 03:20 PM
Thats why the guy wants help from the civic forum, no offense to you teg guys but some things are different. Maybe on a teg its not possible to have that problem.

Tenzo is cheap BUT it is still a name brand as far as intakes go how do you explain the dyno test giving a rsx 20 whp with an aem cai vs only 11whp with an injen? aluminum shifters will most likely break plain as that

that is only ONE of the dyno tests. compare it to clubrsx's dyno charts. it really jus depends. overall NO cold air is really better then others. the only thing AEM HAD going for them was the K&N air filter. u gotta check more sources then jus one to say one intake is better then another.

well, I ate my words, but before I say what happened hear this. I had a cheap one for 2 months and it was fine, so it must have been a quality chep one, about 30 bucks. the one im going to tell you about was 17, so it was a CHEAP cheap one.

I hadnt been driving with it more than 5 hours and WHAM, brok it off going into 2nd gear. the threaded part snapped of inside the shift knob. so in my experiences you got a 50% chance of getting agood one for a low price. but still I dont think you shouyld ever spen the 140 bucks ive seen some selling for, and I havent used them but I doubt that the 60 buck CAI does tons less than the AEM CAI that costs 4 times as much some places.

but for IMPORTANT stuff, spend the money on quality. so just thought id let you all know that I have now experienced what crap you can sometimes get.

So whats better aluminum or stainless steel?(short shifter)I got a mackin inustries short shifter thats stainless steel and it's counter weight on the bottom. Is that how all short shifter are? (counter weight)???? The shop that sold it to me said that it's made by Tanabe? Saying that mackin Industries make products for Rays wheel, Tanabe and other makes is this true? In the Installation manual is says it's a B&M shifter looks just like it go to importpartsusa.com see for ur self oh yea go to engine mods
