Hi guys, I bought this truck about a month ago and noticed that when you put it in reverse you really had to give it gas on an incline. Yesterday I put it in reverse and gave it gas and got a horrible whining sound. Today it did the same thing, now it can't go in reverse unless it is just idling back. I am not having trouble in any other gears. I was just wondering if there was anything that I might be able to look at right now without having to do a full rebuild right now. I need the truck desprately right now as the clutch went in my car and I can't have this vehicle out of commision until the car is done. Please help - just something to be able to get me through the next couple weeks at the most.:runaround:

I would.
Watch here you park it or drive into.
Fluid level in park transmission hot reading full?
Filter good?
If so low/reverse clutches /or seals are bad.
Do not add to a good transmission but.
On a old bad transmission sometimes a bottle of Lucas transmission additive will help some.
And be careful where you park it so reverse is not needed much.
Good Luck

The tranny fluid is full, but it wasn't when I got it. Was run almost dry I'm assuming by how low it was. But the truck did sit for over a year. I am unsure of the filter, and I am leary on changing it. Everyone I know who has done work on a used tranny without prior knowledge of whether or not it was maintained just made the problem worse. And I usually park were I don't need reverse, can be a big headache though.

most likely the tranny is in need of rebuild. make sure the fluid is at the correct level when hot on level ground..make sure the fluid is not over the full mark..the fluid should be red, or a light red brown color ..if its looking gray colored and using a white cotton cloth check for all this..do not use paper material..
if over filled this can be sucked out the dip stick tube..
if you repair this vehicle install a large tranny cooler ..this engine has no power. this causes the tranny to work too much..trucks need an engine with high torque..

Yeah, I agree the tranny is probably junk. But the good news is that the 700r4 is a cheap replacement...unless ofcourse it is a 4X4

If you heard a whirring sound the low/reverse band is prob shot. Need a trans bud.
