e34 530i trans program problem

I have a 94 530i that came up with a trans program message. Basically the car was running great besides a power steering fluid leak coming from the gearbox, but all of a sudden it didnt want to start when leaving work. I finally got it started but it then died less then a mile down the road (this is when the trans program message come up) and it would not start back up.

Does anyone have any idea on likely problems causing this? could the gearbox have anything to do with it?
