Can you give a little more info??
If your dad thinks it's something to do with the exhaust, it could be the catalytic convertor. The exhaust systems on the cavy's are stainless steel, so the rest of the system should be fine. However I don't know how to check that before you spend money replacing it.
Mine had a bad fuel problem when I first got the car, and it idled rough and died a lot. I flushed the fuel tank, changed the fuel filter, and ended up having to get the fuel injectors replaced.

Another thing you may want to check is the o2 sensor. It could also be the culprit.
Pull the codes on the car and see if it's returning an error.

Here's (http://www.v6z24.com/mods/howto/?page=codes) how to read the codes... and at the bottom is a link to a table that shows what all the codes mean...
Good luck, I hope you figure it out, and let us know if you do!!
