TAP Shift.

Tap shift using the steering wheel paddles is making the automatic transmission work as a manual transmission. So basicly you can drive this car as a stick shift or auto trans. Neat toy to try out. I suggest that you make a trip to a GM dealer and ask for a 24 hour road test of this car to find out how it handles and rides.

Having driven the GP with the Tap Shift system, I must say. It..... Is...... BOMB!!!

I just test drove one last night from a local dealership. It was the Comp-G GTP with all the trimmings, running for $30,295.00. I was not overly impressed with the ride. The handle, yes, but the ride was VERY bumpy. They are taking this FF sedan and turning it into a sportster (or attempting to). Yeah, the TAPShift is nice, but with only 4 gears to play with, the gimmick quickly runs out... The interior style and design are the best part, but some of the console parts are tilted in a direction that my fiancee could not see the time or radio controls. She also noticed right away that there is an absence of dual-zone climate control, or automatic climate control. The back seat sucks pretty bad. They're more like the seats you sit ON, not IN. And the roof is terribly close to your head, since the back window slants incredibly downward. I do believe that the Series III 3800 is a little quieter, but then at the higher RPM's, that lovely whine we all love from the blower comes through, and then you feel the car move very fast underneath you. The 260HP is very real in the whole car's set up, but at 3600 pounds, 300HP would serve much better. At that point, I'm sure they would have to look at putting the drive wheel/s at the other end of the car. My advice is to wait for the GXP (285HP {SC} 18 inch wheels, and TAPShift is both on the column, AND THE FLOOR!) when it comes. Pretty soon, from what I hear.

Do you guys like the styling of the new Grand Prix? Personally, I like the "now" older ones better. The back end of the new Grand Prix looks very bland, I have to say the front end looks cool, and interior wise I'm not impressed (but It usually takes time for the new stuff to grow on me).
As for the tiptronic shifting, I agree its way cool but considering this is the first year GM has offered this (on any of their cars??) I'd wait at least a year for them to get all the bugs out and refine the system.

I agree with most of what you've said. I work at a pontiac dealership, and when we first received our new GP's I at first didnt like them too much. But after driving one I started to like them a little bit more. I also like the tapshift but would much rather have a 5 or 6 speed manual. Oh well, cant always get what we want.

It's funny that you call it Tiptronic. That the Porsche name for the same type feature. They've been doing it for almost 10 years.
I like the feature in the GTP but think they could have made the paddles look like they weren't an afterthought. Would definitely prefer a manual trans.

I think they're ugly...they look too much like the bonnie's. I also heard they received the lowest crash test ratings of 19 vehicles in some test...(wish i could remember where i saw that) Hopefully no one hast to test that out though.

WARNING: NOVEL AHEAD....I am very disappointed with the 04. It's hideous! Oh, where to begin... ah, the beginning. The front: If the fog lamps were any bigger, they'd fall off. I thought the last models mug looked mean. Like no other cars would screw with it 'cause it's already in a bad mood. The 04 just looks like scary Kabuki. The rear: booooooring. Not that the 97-03 was flashy, but it didn't take away from the rest of the car. Overall outside: too rounded. All the cool lines are gone. You could drop the last model 2" or so, and it looked like it went on for miles. Very linear, while still a muscular appearance. The inside: very uncomfortable. I am 6'5", and the GP was a perfect blend of size, comfort, and performance. No head room in the front 04, and in the back.... forget about it. The gagues are too EURO. The paddles are unnecessary, unless you actually drive the country Autobahn (which I do). None of the cool amenities that made my wife like the car i.e. dual/auto cc. BTW, she thinks it's ugly, too. Now, to the engine: ONLY THING THEY GOT RIGHT. Very strong 6, and still easy to mod.
Hey 'ilike2drivecars', you work for Pontiac. Please, for the love of God, send the brass and email on my behalf. I am a huge fan of the GP... always have been, but I am ashaned to be associated with the 04 (tear). OK, off the soapbox now.

I'm also a big fan of the Grand Prix, I have a 99 and absolutely love it. I also happen to like the '04. But I do have to agree with you on the rear end there is just nothing to it, looks like they spent all there time on the interior and the series III then the actual look of it. But how could you not like the way this car looks.........

First time poster (and reader). Hi. Name's Danny. Leased 01 Intrepid R/T and now 04 GTP Comp G, loaded.
Unbelievable, your comments. Firstly, I am 6'4" and have no problems with headroom in the front, even with the sunroof closed. Yea, the back seat is iffy but who cares? I also have a Liberty for back seat passengers. Plenty of headroom in that but handling sux BIG time.
A manual tranny is what you want? May I suggest the Taur-ass, or the 300M, Concorde, Intrepid, Magnum or 300C, Impala, Monte Carlo, Regal, Century? Oh yea, you're right. They all don't offer maanuals either. I suppose the buying public prefers autos. Maybe a Porsche with a manual would suit you well, or a Ferrari. Too pricey? Maybe a Focus, Camry, Accord or better yet, an Echo? Well, auto or manual, I'll blow you away hands down with my auto S/C GTP.
Get use to the rear end styling because that's all of what you are going to see of the GTP. I like the looks. Looks a bit euro, yet American. Sharp angles on the sides.
Taptronic? Neat feature. A 5 speed would be nice but not there. You can also find this feature in Porsche and Ferrari. I forgot...too pricey for most of us.
As far as the interior controls are concerned, I cannot see the cockpit of a 747 because I'm not the pilot. The command of the car is dedicated to the driver, not the passenger, therefore the center is angled towards the driver. You can have 1 driver and 0 passengers but not 0 driver and 3 passengers.. It is there for the ease of use and vision for the driver, not the passenger so let your fiance listen to the radio, not look at it.
Anyhow, I said my piece. Not too diss anyone. New on board. Like friends. not enemies. My feelings I guess but it IS a good looking car with lots of features, handling, speed, braking and sorts. Interior is fine, save the back seat. Find another car in its class that beats it, I'll listen. Also consider lease rates/pricing.
Anyone who owns one (EDMUNDS.com) will tell you they love it, honestly, not the made up love-ins re Toyota Echo/Corolla/Camry and sorts.

Yes the new 2004 GTP Comp G is awesome.
1. It is bumpy.
2. The rear seat problem has been fixed they are now making them with more padding.

Sometimes one has to sacrafice ride for extreme handling. Better handling usually means stiffer ride.

04' gp = f*** ugly beaver. from the side the car looks bigger and bubblier(if that's a word). i cant remember if it was motor trend or car & driver that tested it(may be a pontiac magazine)...it's no quicker than an older gtp. it may have 20 exta horses but it's heavier. pros--nice interior and cool exhaust tips. im not meaning to offend anyone that has one or likes it, but the 97-03's are the best looking. id drive my 98 gtp till the wheels fell off before i bought a new one

Jeff,
Do u have the 5 or 10 spoke wheels? If you have the 5, they look great. On my galaxy silver, I prefer the 10 spoke, but yours are nice.
As for fast98gtp, we are still in the same family. Designs change and thats life. Is one year better than another, I don't think so. If you were buying a GTP today and not a few years ago, you would like the 04, guaranteed. All the GTPs are nice with different character and features. We have enough outsiders dissing our cars and we should not compare, only support, each others GTPs, regardless of year.
On the Intrepid sight, nobody bashed the older Intrepids nor did they diss the second gens.
My opinion, thats all!

Now capacity GTP, you condemn fast98's opinion, and in the same breath, give one of your own. That's a little hypocritical... isn't it? In fast98's post, he listed pros and cons, so it wasn't all negative. That's what forums are for - opinions/advice. You are right about us being in the same Pontiac family. Remember he IS a GTP owner, and honest criticism is what we all want. It helps us improve. Besides, it's not like he is a RX8 owner telling us that 'God drives a rotary' or some crap like that. As long as no one is disrespected or threatened, we should welcome all GP owners' opinions. If you are still upset by opinions of your car, perhaps you should detatch yourself from your car a little and avoid forums altogether.
That's MY opinion.
That's MY opinion.

Well, the 1997-2003 car has that really nasty attitude looks. The later 04 look nice but is humblier on it's looks. The 260hp are welcome and from what I read on other sites handling has gotten better. But as someone said on this post we are a family that has been already trashed by a lot of outsiders. I would rader have a 04 GTP Comp G than a 350Z(No offense to Nissan what so ever) but I love American Built Automobiles better because I am american and I am proud of what we can build. There are better and worst cars out there than what I drive but I love GM, Ford, Crhysler better over whatever out there comes this way. Is just because fellow americans inspired to bring all these product to life and I really respect that. Thanks...
