Ok I just saw the Top Speed post that was on here.

I just saw the top speed post that was on here. Sorry if I'm bringin up an old topic, but I wanted to know whats the fastest you've done on winding roads.
See my aunt just got a new Jetta TDi and man does that thing perform good for a diesal. We had that thing going between 75 - 80mph around turns ment to be taken at 45 or 50mph. Its way better than I expected it to be. It had very little body roll I mean very little.

jettas have quite a bit of body roll... not sure what you were driving...
speed in a corner is not indicative of power at all.
it's indicative of your cornering ability and suspension...
i regularly take 45mph corners in 5th gear at 75+...
but that doesn't mean i've got a fast car...
flat out, i've hit 130+...
but i can run faster than most cars in the twisties as well... you can really compare, b/c your 40mph corner is not my 40mph corner...
too many variables

I wasnt really trying to say it has power just that I thought it has good handiling for a stock Jetta or at least better than I expected. But still it really didnt have that much body roll.

wut year jetta?
straight out, i've hit a little over 130, but had room to keep going (not much, but a bit).

i'm sorry to say but i just rented a new model jetta and it had a nice rice but it was horible compared to my car in the handling department.

Yeah! I agree with flylwsi about there being to many variables. You just can't compare so many different corners and speeds and other crap. Other than that, I can say I have done 137mph. I plan on beating that record soon now that I have updated my car. New tires, brakes, Automatic transmission cooler. I'm readdy to go!

Two words. 924 Turbo. Hailed as one of the best handling production cars ever, along with the 944, it eats complex corners 3 meals a day :D
My brother has a very nice turbo, and the other day we drove about 150kms in it, at one point through some fair twisty roads...
Not long before my 924 is on the road, and being lighter with very low sidewall tires, it should be a little bit quicker in the corners. Soon with a 944 suspension swap and higher springates, I should be running 70mph slalom times :D
<ok, so 924 isn't really a word, but for this purpose, we'll make it one ;)>

i personally believe the 924 turbo was a disgrace to porsche... those things are slow... but maybe that's just me :-)
no offense if you have one, it is STILL a porsche.
EDIT: i DO like how they look... just performance wise i think they're awful to have the porsche name on them.

My brother has a Turbo, and a non intercooled 931 making 156hp can do 0-60 in about 7 seconds. An intercooled GTS or modified 931 can easily do 0-60 in under 6 seconds, on 100% stock engine components.
It's one of the most capable handling cars, with a lighter curb weight, better distribution of that weight, and better suspension than an S13, so I don't really see where you get off saying it's a disgrace to Porsche... :)
Not trying to start a flame war here, but I don't really understand your point of view.

o yea the suspension is really good... the 930 and 931's are pretty quick, im not denying it. i was talking about the 924 turbo... i think it does 0-60 in 9 or something like that.
is that right or am i getting bad info? 9 seconds is a long time.. actually i think my auto s13 can keep up with that completely stock.

The 931 is the 924 Turbo, it's the factory code, like how the new 911 is the 996, and the 944 Turbo is the 951.
The 931 does 0-60 in 7 seconds flat, but that's because they're undertuned with no intercooler. With a simple IC setup, they can do over 200hp on stock components, stock fuel system, stock turbo. 200hp is a decent amount of power for such a light car. With no air conditioning, lightweight fixed seats and removing the rear seats, the 924 can easily get under 2300lbs.
I plan on spending about $1000 on rebuilding my engine using 931 parts, for around 230hp. It should be good for low 13s, but I'm really more interested in the handling. I'll be taking the hubs/spindles/brakes from a 944/931, and going with stiff springs custom coilovers all around.

ok i must be getting different info... i thought those were a little pokey.
i thought they were a lil quicker than 9 because i seen one zip around my streets the other day...
btw, any car with a decent engine will be quick if you gut it down to 2300 lbs.
it's just not a typical porsche performance car (0-60 in <5 sec). i love the 911 turbos.

make sure you get expensive coilovers! if you get cheap ones you're ride will def suffer. i went to springs instead because of this.
btw i was just talking stuff.... the 300zx is a different kind of car than mine and in a different performance bracket. my 240sx is a PIECE OF SHIT compared to it
:p but I STILL LOVE IT :p :p :p plus my insurance is a lot lower ;)

Well, teh 240SX is much lighter than the 300ZX, so it has advantages in handling and braking.
The 5 speed 924 NA does 0-60 in about 9 seconds, bone stock. There isn't too much that can be done with them, even if you go full out, new pistons, cam, exhaust, heavy porting, it's still a SOHC 8 valve/cylinder 2 liter engine, with Bosch CIS. Even fully worked, 160 hp is about the most this engine can do remaining streetable.
The NA 924 weighs 2400 lbs stock, however, so if you go for lighter seats, fiberglass hood, air dam, rear bumper, it all adds up pretty quickly. The rear seats aren't really big enough to fit anyone smaller than a toddler in, so they can be removed, there goes 50 lbs, and if you really want to drop lbs, you can get lexan windows and hatch.
If you work at it, you can get it under 2200 lbs.
As for my 924, I'll be happy with custom coilovers, with 250# springs, a 931 engine good for 230hp, an Audi based 931 tranny, with tall gears for easy cruising, and a nice set of light seats. Then come little body mods to make it look nicer :)
RacerD12, after my 924 is mechanically finished, I'll start on my RX7 project... but that's another thread :D

I've read his post and there is not one point he mentions the word power
considering he was talking about cornering speeds, and a top speed run post, he was indirectly noting power.
which, in cornering, is a small variable. so you can have a car with little power, low top speed, and very high cornering speed b/c it has a race bred suspension that is well tuned and allows you to carry more speed into a corner.
thus, the speed a car has in a corner is not indicative of its power, and that is relevant b/c he mentioned reading a top speed post, and then noted that the jetta was a TDi...
which would matter, as it rides on the same suspension and wheels as the 2.0, 1.8t and some vr6 jettas.
so, they should all have the same cornering speed... get it?
(just so you all don't go calling me out, i mean relatively, as the suspension is the limiting factor in a corner, where it is not in a top speed run)

The VR6 weighs almost 200 lbs more than the 1.8T, so wouldn't that give the 1.8T a slight edge? 200 lbs seems like it'd make a difference...

i'm not sure it's that much heavier, and i'm not saying that the times/speeds are identical...
so, they should all have the same cornering speed
note, that i said should...
it's not a perfect world, but they'd be pretty close, if you're going to limit them by suspension...
and the vr6 should be faster through a corner, with more tq and hp than the 1.8t to make up for the weight...
and the overall weight difference b/n the 1.8t cars and vr6 cars isn't that big... unless i'm completely wrong in that...

I have to totally agree with this statement as well. Since my car has factory suspension which is very tired in the rear especially, it does not like to be pushed too hard around corners. I get a tremendous amount of suspension lift on the inside which causes the car to push quite badly at first then go into oversteer right at the apex. I have managed to coax it at 50mph around a 20 mph or 80k around a 35k corner. I've also been just over the 161mph mark or 260k in a straight line. The car sits suprisingly well at those speeds in a straight line on a smooth bit of asphelt. BTW Taranaki can vouch for how well the car does go in a straight line :D
