I'm in need of the timing specs of my 84Z. Right now I have it set at 12 BTDC, and it seems to run just fine, however I just want to get it right on what it's supposed to be to maximize power.
I called autozone and they said it should be 8-12 degrees, then advanced auto said it should be 6 degrees.
Anybody know what the real timing specs for it should be, or a resource where I could get them? Thanks

8-12 degrees is about right. If you want maximum performance set your timing with all mechanical advances fully engaged. This can be done by unplugging your vacuum advance and revving your engine to about 4,000 rpm and checking your timing there. You will need a timing light that has a degree knob on it and a buddy to hold throttle steady. With engine at 4,000 or so rpm, turn the knob on the timing light clockwise until the mark on your harmonic balancer is at 0 degrees. Look at the degree knob on timing light and see what it registers, yours will probably be around 28 degrees, this will be total ignition timing. Set at 32-36 degrees, start with 32 and move your way up til you get the perfomance the way you want it. I would not go past 38 degrees of total ignition timing.
