I have a 2002 pont grand am gt. 6 months after i had it it started idleing rough and the service light came on....took it in to the dealer was told the fuel injection needed to be cleaned and I had to pay for it. they told me the epa had changed reqrmnts etc and for whatever reasons it doesn't affect all cars but some cars need to use the fuel injection cleaner every oil change. I switched to 93 octain.....no problem for a year....recently my dad told me octain doesn't make a dif.....ran 89 oct in it for a month and here I go again back to the dealer..missing and idling rough...my questions i guess are 1. does octain affect your fuel injectors getting clogged?, 2. i'm not into paying 60 - 100 $ every 6 mo to a year for my fuel injection. does anybody know what i can do to avoid this problem?

Try running fuel injection cleaner once a month.

Octane rating has nothing to do with your issue. It is the junk that is left in the gas that the gas companies did not filter out and it is also deposits left on your injectors from the combustion process that cause your problem. Best thing to do is use a name brand gas company like Shell Exxon or Mobil because they use some good detergents in their gas mixtures. As for injector cleaner their is nothing wrong with dumping a can in every tank fill up.
