1989 blazer won't start when hot

Hello all, I'm having a problem with my 1989 s-10 blazer. It has difficulty starting soon after it has been driven. For example, I drove to the store a couple days ago, parked the vehicle, turned the engine off, and realized I parked in a handicapped spot. I needed to move, But the engine wouldn't start, it was acting as if the battery was nearly dead. The engine would slowly turn, but not fire up. Well, after about 10 minutes, I tried again, and although it sounded a little weak, it started up on the first try. I suspect I need to change the battery, but I thought I would make sure before I wasted 70 bucks and still had the problem. Thanks.

Yes wise to test it.
Some parts places give a free charging /battery/starting system test that will show the problem.
And do not forget to check battery cables and ends and grounds and alt belt.

Are these tests something that I could do myself with a volt meter? Like testing the battery and alternator and jumping the starter, etc? Or would it be more involved with diagnostic tools and such?

Yes some of it can but full test need needs load and starter cranking amp draw testing stuff.
Charging and battery voltage and battery cable ends and grounds can be tested with a volt meter or amp meter.

Complete Battery test needs a load tester along with voltmeter.

Starter needs a amp draw tester to see if it is pulling to many amp.
Common problem on old type starters is worn brushes and bushings that pull to many amps hot cranking.

And do not forget the alt belt condition and tightness.
Also battery size and age and condition.
A common problem on old v belts alt pulleys and or to old or small battery .
