oil pressure problems

Lately my k1500 has been acting real wierd with oil pressure. When you first start it up it idles right in the middle at the half mark on the gauge and when accelerated and driving it goes up to almost the 3/4 mark. But after driving for a while say 30 min or more it drops down to the 1/4 mark at idle and when accelerated and driving it stays right below the half mark on the gauge. I'm not sure what the problem could be I'm just hoping its not my oil pump. O ya and its a 92 k1500 5 litre with 203k miles.

when the oil is cold the pressure is ok . then as the oil gets hot it losses pressure. this is normally what happens on worn engines..I suspect the crank bearings are worn. use a higher wt oil to get a few more miles out of it. 20-50wt.
if the oil pump is bad you would always get low pressure. if with the higher wt oil the pressure increases this is engine wear is ,,,what you have..
too many miles on your oil changes ,,/// also using poor quality oil filters .

That makes sense I did have a small assumption that it was probably due to high miles. I'll give the higher wt oil a try and see if that helps. Also while were on the subject how much would an external engine oil cooler help it out?

if the heavier oil increases the hot engine oil pressure, installing an engine oil cooler external should help prolong this engines life.
what oil and what filters have you used over the years. how many miles on your oil changes???
I ask because 200k many have not had this problem with correct fluid replacement. also if you operate on dusty roads/areas , you must replace the oil/air cleaner more frequently..

I actually bought it with 200k on it from the place I work at it was pretty much only driven on dirt roads but the oil was almost always changed every 3k miles. I myself am a mechanic so I change it religiously every 3k with valvoline high mileage oil /U]

the operation on dusty/off road conditions is why its badly worn. this type of use requires the best finest oil filters to be used and constant air filter cleaning/replacement.. also no vacuum leaks as this is how the engine can rapidly injest large amount of abrasive materials..
