Problem with the 4x4

Hi,
When I put in 4x4 ethier in 4H or 4L the green 4WD light in the dash starts to blink. The blink is only when I move forward and is at ramdon. Sometimes it on for about 5 sec. then blinks, sometimes is longer sometimes is more rapidly.
Does anyone have any ideas of what is causing this problem?
