99 Dodge Neon Belt squeaking and squealing

When I put on the air conditioning in my 99 Dodge Neon there is a squeaking and squealing sound, usually when the engine is cold. If I shut off the switch and try again it may make the sound again and again in the same way or it may stop squealing and run the air conditioning ok without any squealing problem. Usually after the car is up to speed on the road the air can be switched on without the squeal sound. Sometimes there is no problem and it works fine. What is the cause of this? Is it the belt or the compressor making the squeaking and squealing sound?

more than likely the belt is loose or glazed.if the belt is old replace it.

My 95 did that but it was the alternator belt caused by the fans coming on with the AC. Kept tightening the AC-power steering belt but it didn't help. Just throwing that in so you check both belts.

The problem was a loose P/S-A/C belt. Tightened it up and no more squeaks.
