I tried an alpha version a long ago, in my opinion it will be a resident evil styled game except with realtime graphics that are superior. It's not that revolutionary, but for real time stuff sure I guess, but, there are many companies out there today, it's alot more competitive but with ID's reputation and Carmack, ya it'll be something.
When games have full HDRI+Radiosity outdoor lightning and other advance raytracing techniques in real time.. games will be truly realistic ;)

Hardware specs will probably be ridiculous. As with any new hyped up big action game, any computer not on the cutting edge of video rendering technology is screwed.
welp, time to get a GeForce 17 i guess! woohoo!

*me whips out ye olde PC Gamer issue*
According to this, the screenshots that were run in this issue were taken on a machine using a Radeon 9700 Pro on 800x600 resolution. They say with a Pentium 4 or an Athlon XP with 512 MB RAM, using the top-range video setup, it should run fine.
They do say that the biggest upgrade one should consider should be in speakers. The game will be optimized for 5.1 and 6.1 surround-sound speakers, so if you don't want to spend that money, get some good headphones.
Release date? According to Amazon (as I posted above, I preordered :D), the release date is listed as November 15th of this year. Now, I have my doubts about that date, but that's the best I know of ATM.

Bah, if you built a computer two months ago you can play Doom 3. I know that my two nicer computers will be able to play it and they are a lot older than two months. Sure it won't looks as pretty as a system with a GeForce FX or Radeon 9800 but it will play it just fine.
I'll try the demo before I buy it. Quake has left a bad taste in my mouth for ID software. It was never a good replacement for the Doom series.

Sounds to me like the graphics card would be the only thing in serious need of upgrade there. :ylsuper

Umm...what currency are we talking about? If that's US dollars, I'll feel free to laugh in your face. :)

Sapphire Radeon 9800 Atlantis PRO - Check
800x600, high detail level - Check
Pentium 4 3.0 GHz PC800 - Check
1024mb DDR Ram - Check
From 1 - 24 FPS :(
Let's hope the final release will be a bit faster...

I'm a bit late on this, but I think your card will work, but a jump to ATI or an upgraded GeForce would be the only thing to help out - not that you didn't realize that alread :)
If you aren't already familiar http://www.pricewatch.com/ and take a peek at the going rates for the video cards. It has the 9700 128 cards at 207 and the 9700 pro at 265 (US$ + delivery). I don't think you'd have to go that far. I have an Athelon XP2100 1gig Ram and a ATI 8500 and I doubt I'll need any better.

Oz your system won't be able to handle it sorry nope :( perhaps barely . I had doom3 alpha.. and althoug htey might optimize things.. well.. i dunno i bet they will only get more detailed (higher poly and higher res textures) so.. I had the same system.. in fact i managed to overclock my card (i have it still heavily modified) and get the same score as a geforce 4 ti4200 in 3dmark 2001 :) It was heavily modified ok, like.. the only other solution to going any further was shuving the card in a fridge :) Right now I have an ati radeon 9500 pro and i doubt ill be able to play.. An ati radeon 9700 pro and gf fx are the only thing i think and not at max settings :X Originally doom3 was meant for a geforce1 and would have run at constant 30fps.. i remember the demo carmack was showing at a mac thingamajig .. heh well they up'd the quality so :) Ah well time will tell. It will be an interested horror survivor like resident evil in my opinion. From what I got to play thats how it felt except of course much newer :)
