When my 97 did that same thing, I dug out the extra key that was new never used and it was fine. So I had a new spare cut from it and tossed the key with the worn teeth.
If you have them make a new key from the worn one the copy will probably still catch,
Some years ago that happened to a car and I had no extra key, so I went to the dealer and the parts man looked up the code and cut a new key with a special punch tool. It worked great.
If a new key doesn't fix it, then the pins in the lock tumbler may be worn. I haven't needed it but I believe you can buy a new tumbler with two keys. But they won't match the door lock.

your lock cylinder is not the key switch , as this is not a switch, this will be difficult to turn when as mentioned the key is worn.
with no new back up key , go to a locksmith or the dealership they may be able to cut the new key to the exact replacement . since this key is worn it would in most cases not be good if you tried to simply copy a worn old key.
always have a new backup key. this is not used, only to make copies.............
