2008 Gear shifting issues only when it starts

I have a '08 Grand Cherokee (V8). I will occasionally get in my car...every third or forth day and put it in gear and it make a awful grinding noise (like it won't lock in gear). I will turn the car complete off and restart it and it works like a charm. If I just put it back in park and try again...the same grinding noise is made. Does anyone have a clue what this could be?

thanks

Are you getting any codes?

Does it ALWAYS return to normal on the first restart attempt, or does it sometimes take a couple of tries?

I'm thinking sensor or fluid issues. How many miles, and is it still under warranty?

It typically goes into gear on the first restart...today was the first time it didn't. They couldn't get any codes off it at the dealership. I have check the transmission fluid. Are there other fluid that would effect this issue?

Once it locks into gear (either forward or reverse) it works the whole time...that is what would lend me to think it isn't a fluid issue.

No other fluid I can think of would cause the issue. How many miles?

I'd take it back to the dealer again and see if you can duplicate the problem. It could be an electrical sensor/fault. Has it always done this, or did it start to appear suddenly?

It has about 55k miles. It just started doing it but is rarely. It does it about every 7 or 8th day. I plan to take it back to the dealer.

I'd get back to the dealer ASAP, to get the history of the situation documented. Take it back frequently if necessary!
