I can only guess that all the specifics of the systems you're talking about on your Euro version van are the same as a US van.

Running rich > I'm wondering if the crankshaft sensor in the new tranny (gearbox) is the same as the old sensor or did they just swap sensors from the old to the new? This sensor has a big effect on engine timing. Other causes could be the fuel pump, leaking fuel injectors, O2 sensors etc. Anything that poors too much fuel in the engine.

No higher than 2nd gear > Sounds like it's in "limp mode". The Transmission Control Module (TCM) has detected a malfunction either internally or from an external sensor and limited damage by limiting gears to 1st, 2nd, and reverse. The TCM should be storing a fault code for you to read with a scanner. More likely you'll have to have the codes read with a gearbox specific scanner to get more specific codes. If you want to take a stab in the blind change the input and output speed sensors.

Cooling fans > Fans cutting when you hit the brakes is a new one on me. Can you see it happening in your driveway? If your A/C is on when you start the car the fans will come on. In any case, the solid state cooling fan control relay is the usual culprit if the fans don't turn on or won't turn off. It's on the frame next to the radiator on the drivers' side. A less likely possibility is an Engine Coolant Temp (ECT) sensor is telling the PCM the engine is hot when it's not. The PCM will then tell the fan relay to turn on the fans.

What model year and is the service engine soon light lit?

I was stationed at RAF Lakenheath for 5 years while in the USAF. Lived in Mundford, Norfolk. Hated to leave.

All problems are electrical, limp mode, fan , ect . sonds like a poor ground, a ground wire may not be hooked up. easy way to check is.,, 1) Use a 12 volt test light from battery ground to body (if the light comes on you have a bad ground ) or 2) Use a jumper wire from battery ground to body ,see if problem goes away. or 3) Use a jumper wire from body to engine, see if problem goes away. Sounds like a bad body ground to me. ( a bad engine ground and the engine would not start). you may have to reset the transmission by disconecting the battery for 20 seconds. plz post what fixed it ,thnx
