I know it does happen, but can someone please explain to me exactly why a cracked exhaust manifold/manifold gasket leak causes exhaust valves to burn? I've got my suspicions but I'd like to know factually what the cause is.

An leak can create a lean fuel condition that increases exhaust valve temp, leading to a burned valve.
