Installing Remote Entry on 2002 T-Blazer LS

I was just wondering if anyone has installed a remote keyless entry on a 2002 Trailblazer LS? If so, how is it done(complexity, tools required)? Also, any suggestions on which brand to go with? I know I'm asking a lot, but I know that someone out there has the answer!! :D

I am in the process of installing an Alarm and Keyless Entry system. It should be easy but I bought the hardware online and the instructions are sparse. I am trying to find out more about the Body Control Module, where it is and where can I tap into the Data wire. I bought a Chilton Manual for the Trailblazer but it is a waste of money. Any references in it to the data bus are phrases like, "It is very complicated and you should take it to your dealer".
When I find out more I will let you know. In the mean time if anybody else knows, please let us know.

First, I have a 96 Z71 that I installed a Audiovox Remote Start/Alarm with all the bells and whistles except for the LCD keychain. You can pick one up here for $142.55: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=330-460
It has the owners manual and Install manual available online! This alarm is no different from any other alarm in terms of installation. There are a few differences, but not anything spectacular. I must warn you, that if you don't have an understanding of automotive electronics, I would highly suggest you have someone capable do it. For one, you will definitely need a multimeter to check wires for resistance, continuity, voltage,etc. You will be working underneath the dash and around sensitive components. You need to know how to disconnect your air bags, so in the event you probe the wrong wire, you do not deploy one. You need to have the ability to understand power flow and read wiring schematics. I know that places like crutchfield will send you a paper telling you which wires to connect to, but I'm not sure how vehicle specific they get. Do they give you color pictures, do they keep wire colors up to date? These are just some things to thing about. Anyone can install the physical pieces like the siren, the control box, and the antenna, but it takes an understanding to interface the unit into the vehicles electrical system. If you are ONLY trying to get remote keyless entry, why not see if you can get the factory modules that should just plug into connectors under your dash that are right now just hanging. You need to check all your options and decide what features you really want. I prefer my aftermarket alarm, because I am able to get increased range, remote start, illuminated entry, power door locks, and alarm functions all in one unit. The reason I opted not to go with stock components is because my truck came equipped with Remote keyless entry already, but I had no remote. For the price everyone wanted for two new Key remotes, that was the entire price for a new alarm with remote start. I hope this helps you make a better informed decision. I know that installer shops will rape you blind if you are unaware of the features that will be installed. This is because each wire that gets connected from the control box into the vehicle has it's own particular requirements. And if you have vehicle drivablity problems down the road, you want to be sure that the installation of said keyless entry is not to blame. -Chris

You guys can email me directly if you want. I install remote starters for a living. I own my own shop. I will tell you NOT to try to do this install. The BCM on this vehicle is so complex and GM is having fits with them. They have many wierd problems with them along with the passlock2 system.

The hard way is to install relays in each front doors and to do neg. trigger for the rears. Then you have the alarm and other things to deal with. If you are lucky enough to get Directed Electronics parts, you can use part number 455g. You simply hook up one wire to the databus wire. You can get this at the OBD2 connector under the dash. It is usually a purple wire. You should be able to find a good DEI dealer in your parts of the country. I sell them installed here in Ohio for $125 plus $35 for the databuss module. I can even do domelights and driver's door unlock only from this module.

I just have one other question. How do I identify the OBD2 connector under the dash. It would be much easier to tap in to the databus under the dash than to run wires from the dash to under the rear seat.

It is at the only connector located next to the parking brake or left side of the driver's lower dash. I would like to know what brand and model number of what you are trying to install. DO NOT IN ANY FORM PROBE OR GROUND THE WIRES! If you do, you'll be buying a new BCM. Trust me, these T-Blazers have enough electrical problems and don't need any help.
