Transmission beather

2002 Astro AWD LS, Engine=X, 172,000mi

I took the engine cover off to inspect my AC hoses, ( I have a leak ).

While doing this I observed a hose, coming up the left side of the transmission ending behind the left (driver's side) head with a foam filter that has dissintegrated. Is it a transmission breather? Or a transfer case breather? I wonder if I can replace it with a generic breather filter?

Thanks,
Donny

It's either the vent for the front axle actuator, (if the vehicle has one) or it's a vent for the transfer case. Either way it needs a filter of some sort on it. As long as whatever you put on it is free flowing, it will be fine.

Thanks old_master. I finely found the time to look at further. I followed the rubber hose down and followed it to the transfer case. I went to another GM dealer and found the filter.
