Can't weld in CATS?

I went to three muffler shops and was told that due to the CAT (pass side) being two close to the trans, it can't be welded in place. Only a Y-pipe can be installed. The two CATS cost me $200.00, Y-pipe is $434, I'm not rich. Is there anyone out there that can tell me if I can only get a Y-pipe on the 2004 Tahoe with 5.3, and 4x4.

all these vehicles have Y pipes with the cat welded into them .thats how they come. most cut out the old converter and weld in the new. no big deal.

it for some reason your vehicle is different have them drop the Y pipe and weld it.

That's exactly what I said. Then the price went up by like $150. I said forget it, I'll get the y pipe and they will lose the business. Thanks

Just cut out the old one and clamp the new one in place.

I had the my Y pipe break at the manifold. I just cut that out and went to the Junk yard and pick up the pipe and bolted it in with a u bolt and a larger pipe connection over the cut. This was on a 99 ans still working 4 years later.

Shops want like $1k to do the job as the Y pipe cost about $750 or more. Cost me less than $15 for the pipe, connector and 2 U bolts.
