1998 JGC w/196k
Jeep has been running strong but recently I suspect compressor problems. After all these miles my a/c is now working intermittently. When the a/c works it's nice & cold but other times it's only warm air coming out. Also, when working it will sometimes change to blowing warm air. I haven't heard any strange noises although I don't drive it much, it's the wires car.
Is there anything I should check for or should I just change the compressor?

Check the pressure in the system first, if there's not enough coolant it will do that. I'd suggest using something with a leak locating dye in it, so you can find the leak.

I'll try this first, I know a new compressor is a few hundred. Thanks

you probably have a worn compressor clutch normally when that happens it works great until it heats up the quits engaging you should have a mechanic either replace the clutch coil or remove the center bolt and reshim it to correct the air gap if you try yourself it will probably pop the front seal and shoot you in the face with refrigerant

Took the Jeep to a local shop & was told the valve in the top A/C line was no good. I'm referring to the line with the low pressure port, it comes out of the firewall, goes over the coolant reservoir & connects near the rad. The end that connects near the rad has a valve inside which supposedly was no good. I had a new line installed & although the air is ice cold, I haven't used it long enough to see if it stays on (wifes Jeep & temp has dropped lately.) I'll take it out soon & run the A/C to see if stays on.
