Transmission

Yes my Taurus was running fine a lady was turning in front of me hit brakes to slow down went to accelerate again RPM's went up but tranny wouldn't engage. I have the tranny out my first thought's were torque converter but not sure it make's like a whinning grinding type noise and thats it i have the tranny out and the insides of the torque converter move around qite abit was wondering if this is normal??
