Replaced hazard switch - all turn signals blink at once now

I am helping a friend with his 2002 Grand Am. He was having intermittent turn signal problems. Sometimes they'd work, sometimes not.

We installed a new hazard switch from NAPA. The hazards work like they should. But when you operate the turn signal (stalk), both left & right turn signals come on at the same time.

Should we dig in and clean/check the multi-function switch? And/or did we maybe get a defective hazard switch?

Thanks for any ideas.
Steve

Well I just took apart and cleaned the turn signal/multi-funtion switch. Definitely had some cooked grease in there, but made no difference in the turn signal operation.

I connected the original (problematic) hazard switch and was able to get the turn signals to work like they should. Then installed the replacement hazard switch and had all the turn signals going at once.

I called NAPA and they ordered a replacement hazard switch for this defective one.

I would suspect a defective hazard switch.

As for your original issue, I hightly suspect that your issue is the switch/arm...

It's a known issue with this car, just google up for something like "grand am 2002 turn signal smoke"

And yes, smoke. Like mine, was working all correctly, until I started to have a weird issue: the relay was clicking as usual when I was signaling, but at "off" it was double speed clicking. Playing with the flasher arm ended up "fixing" the double clicking. One day I was driving and... SMOKE... Ended up buying a can of electrosolve contact cleaner zero residue. Cleaned the switch, put back in. it's been over a year now and still working flawlessly as it should.
