Rover Tomcat

Anybody know much about them.

They came from the period when they were affiliated with Honda so what are they based on.

Theres 4 engine leves I think, up to a 2 litre turbo.

Leather Trim is available.

Im sure theres no aftermarket support for them at all

Restyled Integra with leather and a Turbo'd Rover K series engine.

Theres a few running around Auckland, and there apprently very fast cars, putting out something like 180-200hp.
But they wern't cheap and so are mainly owned by old men going through a mid life crisis in need of a good "British" sports car.

I never seen one badged as a Tomcat though. All the ones Iv seen have a "200" badge and a small "Turbo" badge.

Anyone know how well they sold in the UK? (I know they were popular in japan)

Yeah - I know a bit about them cos I have one. :-)

Basically a standard machine is 200bhp, does 0-60 in 6.2s, a quarter mile in 15s (sometimes a bit less).

Has a 2 litre turbo engine with t25 turbo, running about 6-8psi as standard.

My car has the following spec:

Apexi AVC-R running .9 bar boost, All samco hosing, chrome bits, Mongoose Exhause with De-cat, Blitz C1 air filter, Blitz Super Sound Blow Off Valve, Battery in boot, MGF Dials, Carbon Surround, Digital Charge temp guage, White Lockwood Dials, Blue Illuminated Dash, Meshed grill and air dam, MGF clear side repeaters, Kosei Seneka Racing RG Black Chrome 17x7 Wheels with Yoko A539 205/40 rubber, Lightly smoked windows, Koni Yellow T/A Suspension, Sparco Strut Brace, Powerflex Bushes, Wilwood Superlite 4 Pot Calipers, 315x28mm Discs, EBC Green Pads, Braided hoses all round, Dot 5.1 Fluid, Lots of Security.

My car is 255bhp, 211bhp @ the wheels, Sub 6s 0-60.

There is loads of parts available for this car in the UK.

Jap spec versions had full leather and air con as standard.

Hi guys, Im in Auckland. I currently own an Integra VTiR and wanted to turbo it, but then found out after MUCH research that turboing hondas is not the best thing to do if you want reliability in you car/engine. Rover Tomcats have caught my attention and i am really keen to have a look at some modified ones. Well I see about 1 or 2 Tomcats crawling around a week, and go to Autopoint.co.nz and there are a few for sale for 10-grand-ish, but I doubt thier reliability. Most the Rover 200 Coupes I have seen have at least one form of "Boy-racer" modification done to them and they are capable of 200 bhp, which is an impressive figure.

Though being a restyled 'Teg would make them FWD right???

I have a tomcat (220 coupe turbo)

200 bhp from the factory with 171 ft/lbs torque and approx 150 bhp /ton

6.2 secs to 60 (MPH) and 150 (MPH) top end.

comes with half leather recaro seats leccy windows/mirrors, Glass T tops etc.

Unlike most other FWD cars mine actually appears to go round corners thanks to the std. torsen diff which unlike most other performance cars is not a LSD but a torque sensing diff. one of the only FWD cars Ive driven where i am more likely to lose the back end than slide the front . . . .

anything you wanna know just ask . . ...

and as for aftermarket support, in Europe there was a whole race series based around them . . . .you dont get much better modification support than that !!!

sorry to dig up an old thread .. ive just bought a 220 gti and in dire need of some aftermarket parts from nz if possible.. anyone can help? :D
or like instructions on how to move battery to the back etc etc.. if theres anyone else in auckland with the same sort of car maybe we can meet up sometime :D

It's amazing how mixed up information gets, reading this thread is like chinese whispers.

I run Rover Coupe UK which is a forum available to anyone worldwide although the main bulk of owners are naturally in the UK. The TRUE specs of the car are:

4 engines with 5 levels, Honda 1.6 used from 1992 to 1995, Rover 1.6 K series used from 1996 to 1998, Rover 1.8 VVC K series (VVC being variable valve control) 2.0 Rover T series naturally aspired (NASP) used from 1992 to 1995 and finally the same 2.0 T series with a turbo used from 1992 to 1996.

The hatchback which bears similar looks and some parts the same was a reshelled Honda Concerto, not integra. Rover then developed the car creating a coupe with targa roof, code named in development 'Tomcat' It was never officially called Tomcat in production.

They sold well in the UK and the y did not actually sell as well as had been hoped in Japan as many destined for Japan either got half way there or never left the UK, just sat in fields/warehouses and then got converted back to UK spec and sold in the UK. I beleive Japan only got the 2.0 Turbo officially.

Trim levels vary depending on model and options taken up when bought new. 1.6 models came with fabric seat but could have full leather, the 1,6 SE had higher spec and shared the front fogs and rear spoiler of the 2.0 and 1.8. A lot of coupes came fitted with half leather recaros and all Japs and a fair few UK models had the full leather and air con.

There is a large following for them in the UK for a car that was not produced in as big numbers as many other cars. If you have a Honda lump in one you can seriously modify it to take a VTEC and a few have been done, both SOHC and DOHC. Turbos as standard kick out 200 bhp and top speed of 150mph and with lots of money you can get them to 300bhp. The most powerful T series engine I beleive to exist has been tuned to over 400BHP but you have to have serious cash to do that.

There are various companies now specialising in Rovers and some specifically for coupes.

There was indeed a race series for them but Rover backed out of sponsorship and now they have been combined with all the other touring cars to make one group and some interesting racing. RoverSport keep stocks of race bits but have recently been clearing out the coupe specific stuff as demand has died down a lot.

My particular coupe is a british racing green turbo with the rarer full cream leather where as most full leather is ash grey. They handle best when lowered and bigger 17" alloys fitted and with a nice set of very grippy tyres they go round corners like it's on rails.

Sorry to put such a large post but thought I would settle a few of the misunderstandings.

i just wanna doublecheck and clean something up once n for all.. is the 220 Gti infact a honda engine? or is it part honda engine?.. are the parts that need replacing honda? clutch..gearbox.. etc or will they cost me an arm and a leg to get them replaced?

Blue, when you say a 220 GTi, is that a coupe or a 3 door hatchback? I know they called the coupe a GTi in some countries but in the UK the GTi was a hatchback only but some people like to call them coupes, though, by definition, it can't be.

anyway, to answer the question, the 2.0 litre engines are rover's own. as you stand infront of the engine, the gearbox will be on your right, thats rovers PG1 gearbox. Whereas, on the honda engined coupes the engine is a single overhead cam and the gearbox is on the left.

The only thing the 2.0 really shares with Honda is the dashboard, whiich if you ever take aout, you will see the honda stamps on the back.

What its do you need or are you just thinking about future costs? Let me know if there is anything specific and I will see if anyone I know has what you want and check out shipping costs. I supply a guy in Argentina with coupe parts as it's cheaper for me to get them and send them to him than for him to pop down the road and order the bits up.

ohh i see.. ummm i think its the coupe ay.. looks like da pic in ur sig :p..except doesnt say turbo? its a '95.. so its not a tomcat.. but im pretty sure its a coupe.. mines a dohc turbo.. hmm does that mean its got honda gauges? so if i were to get those 'EL' gauges honda ones will do? oh and also i wanna be putting in a momo steering wheel but im not sure what boss kit fits..
im getting a new clutch fitted in this weekend at $600 NZD i dunno how much cheaper u can get the parts.. i was just wondering incase i blow a head gasket etc.. also for an exhaust system.. would i need a custom one made up? are u able to get exhausts? ummm i probably have a few more questions in mind but my minds gone blank now D:

just to clear things up...a hatchback looks like this:

The dash is honda but the dials are rover, Rovers, in the UK at least, run 130mph and 150mph but Hondas run 120mph and 140mph.

You can buy el gauges for Rover speedos I can tell you one place in the UK that sells them. Are your gauges mph or kph?

If you have a coupe then it's a tomcat, any coupe is a tomcat as it was just an unofficial name.

clutch and exhaust is probably going to be a bit too pricey to send but can check if you want.

nah, the red coupe was mine but the hatch is just someone I know from another forum. That hatch is quite cool, had a turbo conversion done and does shift some.

You have the 4x4 version then, lol. deffo need to get it lowered asap. I'll never know why they made the 200 sit so high.

Thinking about it, I could have just said the coupe has twin removable glass panels in the roof which is unique to the coupe....and some freelanders.

btw im lowering it via springs compression then heated.. is there any honda springs that would fit it btw? and i heard installing new springs dont actually lower the rover that much and it'd b better getting it compressed... or was da guy just tryin to rip me off O_o..

any rover on standard ride looks like a 4x4.

I lowered mine 30mm and it sits nicely now. you can commonly get 30mm or 40mm springs and uprated shocks. You can also get custom made springs but to be honest 30/40mm drop is about as low as you want to go as the sump, exhaust and engine mount bracket will be very near the ground. on my 30mm drop, I have the lowest part of the car at a mere 6.5cm from the ground. Do a search on ebay for Rover 200, you'd be suprised what you can buy. Make sure you search 'available to...'

I forget where you were from now. Was it aus or new zealand? I only know two coupes in zealand.

aww poo.. ummm im from nz.. when i was looking for one there were a couple coupes around.. probably driven by family people so it'd pretty much all be stock.. there is one ive heard.. but not yet seen.. (like a myth).. a red one thats had the $$ put in it.. i dunno if u've seen it or something..
yea.. i dunno bout the whole ebay thing i havent really gotten into that...
was ur drop on rover springs on honda?
ive only got 15" mags on mine so i dunno how its gonna look afterwards O_O..

The size difference between 17" and 15" is minimal when you take into account you would have a lower profile tyre on a 17" rim so as not to alter the total diameter too much. With 15" rims your car will sit just as low as that hatchback I posted, the arch gap will be identical and as the standard 15" rim and standard tyre is just fractionally smaller in diameter your car will sit lower to the ground by a small amount.

I fitted G max springs and monroe shock absorbers but I think I will change to a full Koni set up as the Gmax are a bit to firm. Check out after market suspention kits and look for Rover 200 pre 1996.

The two coupes I know of in NZ are owned by the same guy who loves British cars. One coupe is a road car and one was an import car and I beleive there is some problem with unofficial imports to NZ so he had trouble registering it and decided to strip it out, fit a roll cage and he now races it. From what you say, it sounds like there are a few more coupes out there.

What I will do for you, maybe tonight (UK time) is dig out a few web sites that specialise in Rovers. They will be UK ones but it will give you an idea of what you can buy and what can be achieved. I'll PM them to you as I guess the moderators could get annoyed if I post them on here and I don't want to get a ban.

ohhh yup..
i was wondering when i push my turbo pass 10ish psi i think it misfires? is that usual? does that mean theres something wrong with the turbo? i dunno what other coupe turbo's boost at.. i heard its around 7?
just gettin a bit worried thats all.

That will be the ECU cut out. I think it has a cut out around the 11psi mark, kind of a safety thing. The turbo should normally boost to about 6psi but you can safely take it up to 11/12psi for normal use. Anything more that and prolonged use over a short time will either melt or charck your pistons, depending on which ones are fitted. I wouldn't worry about the misfire, it is a sort of reassurance that your not going to far. If yours cuts in about 10 it could be either the gauge is slightly out or maybe there is some slight variance between each ecu? There is a chip available for the Rover which is a complete con. It's quite literaly a resistor that costs about 3p and all it does is bypass the safety cut out.
