I own a 1995 pontiac grand am gt 3.1L it has over 200 thou km on it.
i have owned it about a year. about 6 months ago we had some problems. when you put the car into D or R, sometimes the car wouldn't move. seemed if we played with the shifter it would sometimes work. it finally gave out on us and won't move now~!
now i have been told i need a whole new tranni. i don't know what the problem is any ideas???

From what youre saying does sound like the trans has crapped oout. :(
Have you checked your trans fluid, or tried replacing the trans fluid & filter ?
Have your tried shifting into all forward gears, with no movement?
