My first Fujimi!-Civic Type R progress

Just cracked this one open today. This is my first Fujimi and so far it is about what I expected. Will be finished in chrome yellow with black interior. The wheels will be a shade of aluminum, unless I can buy some "aftermarkets" for it.

The few parts it has seem very good, but there isn't a whole lot to see!
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/225475peices.JPG

The wheels are pretty whimpy, but I knew they would be from what everyone says about Fujimi. Anyone have a nice set of wheels to offer up for this project?
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/298892civicwheels.JPG

Overall fit of the body panels seems decent. However the rear peice will need filling. Any tips on this best way to fill this gap?

http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/265704civic02crop.JPG

The other side is the same:

http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/849048civic03crop.JPG

Throw me some ideas on taking care of this fit problem. I have Testors red putty and a tube of "bondo" glazing putty and I have never been very pleased with either. Think it'll be ok to just "pack" the gap and sand/file the details back out?

More pics to follow in the days to come!

I had to fill and sand the ends of the rear skirt and side skirts on mine. It looks better if you do that whether the fit is bad or not anyway. Also you'll notice the rear side windows aren't marked for black trim on the inside but are suppose to have it. Make sure the holes are drilled at the base of the wndshield for the wipers, mine weren't

Yeah! I opened my IS200/Altezza Fujimi kit yesterday, the wheels are CRAP! I was hoping to use the wheels for my Tamiya Supra kit, but the Tamiya wheels are much beefier!

Crap, I hadn't noticed the the missing trim around the windows. That'll give me fits, I'll take a look at yours to get an idea on the shape/size and go from there.

As for the wipers...there are no holes in mine either. For some reason I seem to leave them off my models anyway. Kinda like the show cars that have them removed and the "nubs" plugged.

Thanks for the response!

Here's an idea for you... the 30th anniversary Civic Type-R. It's red, I think it's the first time a Type-R Honda has ever been offered in red, someone correct me if I'm wrong. This car looks great in red. :) . Although chrome yellow sounds very nice as well, your choice. :)

Man, I have a brand new can of TS-8 Italian Red that I'm saving for my Enzo, if I ever get brave enought to start it!

I think I'm pretty set on the chrome yellow. But, do I still do the front seats in red?!?

Buy a can of Mica Red :D

The front seats are red in stock form, but heck... you can do them in pink if you like, on second thought, please don't :bloated:

I think red seats would look wierd in a yellow car, I'd do yellow to match. :)

You can make your own window masking by putting some masking tape, sticky side down, on a clean surface, lay the winow on it and trace around the outside of the window with a pen. Remove the window and draw a line about 3/16" inside the one you traced and cut it out, stick it on the inside of your window, mask the outside, and spray on your black trim. It's easier and cleaner that way.

That is pure genious! I will do exactly that, much better than my idea that envolved scotch tape!

Integra818- I was thinking the same thing, yellow seats to match.

Progress is pretty slow (seems to be the only speed I build at) and I have most everything sanded and ready to prime/paint. The gap was easy to fill around the rear and flash/mold lines were not too bad either.

Wheel/tire delima seems to be solved, I picked these up today at lunch:

Tell me what you think about the selection. There isn't a lot to offer localy and I thought these would do the trick. Comes with larger brake rotors also. Will try to get some pics of the actual wheel set under the car later this week.

Thanks for the positive reply!

They'll stay aluminum. I had originaly intended to repaint them but, after looking closely at the finish I have decided to leave them the way they are.

The "lug" holes are a high gloss chrome, which looks rather catchy. You can't see it in the pic from their website, I'll try to get some real pics soon so everyone can see what I mean.

Wow! missed this tread before!

great selection of colour , I think the chrome yellow would really look good and give the little details some texture.

As for the rims, well, you made a great choice!
the 17ers should look just nice under it, and you will probably see it's a joy to lower these suspentions, I had a blast doing my ITR's , they aer just so easy and look really realistic.

As for the seats, whatever you do; Do not make them gloss!

I had the same problem with my Atezza...the front lip did not fit well.

Just glue it as best you can to start with, then when dry, sand the arch, taking care to follow the arch of the wheel.
You shouldn't have to sand out much. Then putty up the small join line on the inside, prime and paint :)

Well I decided to burn the midnight oil and get these pics up tonight! I like the different look these wheels give the kit. It’s the first time I’ve bought a wheel set for a model and I was a little worried about dishing out another $9. I think it was well worth it.

BTW- Body still isn’t primed and none of the other parts are either. I also picked up some matt yellow for the seats today. My wife said the yellow body with red seats would have looked like a McDonald’s car! So the interior will be black/yellow.

I know I’m eating bandwidth, so no more pics until I get some real work done! I promise!!

Sorry... I've been crackin dumb jokes all night :p

The wheels look alot more better than on thier websire. In your pics, you can really see the detail of the wheel/brakes. The company knows what they're doin too (kinda). If you notice, the brake disc has a hat, which is the center part that can be seperated from the disc. Brake discs like this cost alot in real life, so when you put them on a model they look REALLY special. They should'ev done slotted rotorrs though, drilled is'nt as good as slotted, it's ok... nothin putty won't fix! :D

I just remembered, Enkei makes those wheels for 1:1 cars!

Ria-No carbon fiber for me. I'd give it a try, but I don't have any. I'd probably make a mess of it anyway!

Primera man- I'm pretty pleased so far. Fujimi didn't make it this kit flawless by any means, but most of the troubles are small ones. By all means put your hat back on! :D I'm truely not worthy, not yet anyway! ;)

Endlesskev86- Sorry man, the wheels are staying the way they are. But I'm glad you like the rest of the car! ;)

The interior is painted in semi flat black, front seats are matt yellow for now. I searched the web and found a few pics of an 02 Type R and it had dark grey seats, so these may wind up being black/grey. The matt yellow I bought looks awful, almost mustard yellow! :apuke:

Body will be trimmed out this week, had thoughts of opening the grill and the lower valance before painting. As you can see I was too chicken to take the knife to it. Will do the best I can with black paint. Also I may tint or "black" out the rear windows.

Don't plan to do much to the chassis, it's all molded and I'm not much to mask/paint something that will virtualy never be seen. I will try my hand at making a larger exhaust tip for it though.

Thanks for looking, more to come!

Did you prime the body before painting it? If yes, what primer and paint did you use?

I honestly have no idea. I would have to assume that all wheels aren't made for Tamiya.

These wheels (only ones I have ever purchased) where supposed to be a direct fit for this Fujimi model and several other kits from Fujimi, Tamiya and Revell. This was not the case, I had to change mounting methods on the spindle, grind the back of the rotors flush, delete the "pin" used to hold the wheels in place and glue the wheels (with spacers attached) directly to the rotor. They look great, but it was much more difficult that I expected.

My best advice is to find a set of wheels you like, buy them and make them work on your particular application. With modifications I suppose most any wheel will "fit" most any model.

If you want a second opinion (I highly recommend that you get one) post this question as a new topic over in the modeling forum.

Rear windows are blacked out to give that street "limo" tint look:
http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/108995civic008.jpg

Wide band on top of the windshield, giving it the tinted look. The side windows are not painted, just looks dark in this shot.

Headlight/taillight areas are painted using Duplicolor Chrome. Grill is in x-18.

The lighting made the paint look faded in this shot:

Thanks!

The Duplicolor is amazing stuff. It sprays so fine and covers extremely well. I've gotten the overspray on my hand and it is super then, but has such a vibrant color. Seems like they are a step ahead in the chrome sprays!

I'll be heading to Scalefest over in Dallas tomorrow, so the rest of the weekend will be devoted to all the new gadgets and toys I'm bound to bring back! :D Should get the Civic finished sometime next week, not alot left to do.

What does everyone think about the color for the seats? I'm thinking I'll spray them with the Chrome Yellow (to match the body) then topcoat them with a matt clearcoat.

Any opinions out there??

Thanks for the compliment...the windows aren't really tinted. I just sprayed them with semigloss black on the inside. Most of the street cars I see with tint have it so dark you can't see inside them. I did it to the two rear side windows and the hatch window. The black strip was added to the windshield the same way. The door windows are clear to allow a little glimpse of the interior.

Yep, needs some color in the interior, hardly any solid black interior's in Tuner World these day's. Topcoat with matt clear if cloth, semi gloss if leather(plastic dash, door panels too), or matt inserts and semi gloss side bolsters. :)
