Acceleration Issues

Hello all!
Recently been having issues with my 2000 Metro (Chevy 4-cyl) with acceleration.
Sadly, I don't have a tachometer in the car so I can't say exactly where it's doing it but it will rev up to a certain point, level off and stay at the same RPM then continue to increase again before it shifts to the next gear. The gas pedal pressure never change the entire time. Sometimes it doesn't level off but instead revs down a bit before going back up again.
What typically causes this to occur? All fluids have been checked and are at normal levels. A/C is not being ran and it's just my 120lb self in the car.
