My car is gettin worse, and I dont know wats wrong. As i said b4 im burning oil pretty bad, I checked it last week and it was below the low dot. Here's something i didnt mention last time cuz i know ill get hella ragged on, but it may be important info. I added 2 quarts of oil to my car a few days ago....and forgot to put the cap back on, however i didnt realize this till i got home and saw it drippin down my front bumper....it was all over all my shit, sucked ass. Found the cap tho and put it back on. My heres the part u'll rag me on lol, the next day i added another quart of oil, because i was worried about how much was missing....and i forgot to put the cap on again lmfao. So once again it got over everything, but i put it back on again (only went like 2 miles each time, luckily, and no smoking occured). Heres the rest of my story, so try to stay focused and stop laughin at my stupidity. Yesurday I had a no smoke oil treatment and a prevent oil burning treatment, and dumped nearly both of all of em in there. Then today is when shit started goin wrong. As i was leaving school my exhaust was shootin out white smoke like crazy, but then stopped once i got goin. Then later i went to my friends how and it started smokin more again. Then leaving my friends house it was crazy smoke the whole way, u could barley see behind me, it was gay. My friend says the smoke is bluish-white, which he says is oil. So heres my question: WHATS THE PROBLEM? My bro thinks it could be head gasket, my friend says it my crappy engine with 170k miles on it. Wat do u all think? Thanx in advance.

PS If ur gonna hate on me for being a moron, plz have something helpful to say too......unless its funny, then have at it. Thanx again

dont feel bad i've done the exact same thing before. forgot to put on the oil cap, drove around, didnt realize until i saw oil dripping out the hood, put oil in it, and forgot to put the cap BACK ON AGAIN.

so dont feel bad.

If I were you, i would do a couple things, first of all, check your compression. this really isnt an indicator, because you can have perfect compression and have your oil rings be fried, but if you have low compression, your rings are the culprit..

Btw, what exactly happened right before it started smoking, or is it just a time lapsed thing where it got progressively worse..

I had something similar happen to my D16A6, turned out to be Cylinder wall was scorn and piston rings were fused together.... all in all one hell of a mess.

3 days later the ZC was in.

Nothin happened, put the two things of oil treatment in last night, and today everything just slowly got worse. Could I have too much crap in there? Consider i have like near 3 quarts of oil plus two things of oil treatment?

PS This may sound stupid, but how would i check compressoin?

the head gasket normally doesnt cause just an oil burning situation, simply because when it goes it usually spews water all into your cylinders as well. and trust me, water burning is a lot more noticeable than oil.

you probably have either bad oil rings or bad valve stem seals. its more than likely valve stem seals. mine went out on my old d15b. you could check compression, but that doesnt always tell you if your oil rings are bad, cause your compression ring could still be good enough hold a decent seal, but cannot properly scrape the oil off the cylinder walls on the down stroke.

basically, the only thing you can do is put additives in the oil to delay the inevitable rebuild

overfilling your car with oil WILL make it smoke like crazy.

and to check compression, you get a compression gauge that screws into your spark plug hole...

1. remove all spark plugs
2. remove fuel pump fuse (the book says this but i never do it)
3. hold throttle all the way open
4. crank the engine over about 6-8 times until you get a solid reading.
5. repeat for each cylinder.

both honda engines i've had register @ about 180psi if its in good shape.

My stock motor in my first hatch smoked incredibly bad. Not only was the smoke black, it also spewed liquid oil/water mixture out the exhaust tip.

We used to call it the "James Bond Smoke-screen Car"....hahhaha

I remember this one time, some guy in a 2000 Corvette was riding my ass. Now this guy was REALLY riding my ass like 6" off my bumper. So first I slow down, I didnt brake check, Im not stupid. I speed up and he's right back up there. So after about the 5th time, and me screaming at the asshole, I lose it. I put the car in neutral, and bounce the throttle off the limiter for like 10 seconds. I look back, and the dude is fukking going nuts. His pretty silver corvette now has a black hood. I can see the fukking oil running up his windshield. He flips and passes me on a double yellow single lane road. As he passes, I catch a glimpse of his girlfriend, and shes got soot on her face. Me and my cousin just point and laugh as he speeds off.

AHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA!!!!

As far as I can tell, its your rings...In fact I'd put $$ on it. Thats exactly what was wrong with mine. Depending on what your future plans for your car are, I'd either rebuild the motor, or move on. Speaking of which, I still have my Si motor for sale. I have people asking about it, so don't wait too too long.

Dude...I don't think you should be driving around with all those additives and shit in there....Even tho you drove around with oil spewing out the hole (been there done that ;)), you really didn't lose that much. I would recommend that you NEVER blindly add oil...always use the dipstick to check...Also remember, that when you first cut off the engine, a fair amount of oil is still up in the engine, and it takes a few minutes to seep back down to the oil pan. Driving around with too much oil can kill the motor...over-filling is probably worse than driving around a quart low.

To that end, my advice..get 5 quarts of FRESH brand-new oil, and a new filter. CHANGE your oil (new filter plus 4 quarts) and then check it every day, having the 5th quart as a backup if you are burning oil. Then we can better assess the problem. There is no telling what those oil thinning/engine destroying additives have done to your motor :(

:hehehe: :hehehe: i left my oil cap off twice....the second time i went to the car was to rinse of the engine bay and it wouldn't start :hehehe: i say start savin for a new engine cause i'm having to do that now.....itz not cause ur car has +140k miles on it...my last hatch had +200k miles and didn't smoke like my car does now...if u wan to slow the burning...u can do like i'm doing....i put in 20w50 oil.....helps slow the burning alot...

I've never had any luck with those additives, and I don't recommend them. If your problem is serious enough for additives, it's serious enough to fix properly. That's not even a band-aid as far as I'm concerned.
I like the oil change idea. At least you know what you're dealing with again. You might have had too much oil in there, as has been previously stated.
When you have too much oil in the pan, your crankshaft can actually touch the oil, and it's not supposed to. That spinning crankshaft whips the oil up into a froth, like meringue, and your oil pump can only pump liquid..not froth.
It behaves exactly the same as a motor with NO OIL AT ALL!
Yeah, change the oil. Do a compression test, to find out if your your rings are toast, or if it's just a valve problem.
Either way, unless you are qualified to do rebuild your head yourself (I'm a good mechanic, and I can't do that), you're probably looking at a couple hundred bucks.
Just swap in an SI motor. You'll be happy, and it'll be cheaper, too.
Flunky
PS-You may not have any cash at all. Still, parking it is cheaper than having to get it towed, or attracting enough attention to get a ticket of some sort, which clouds of smoke might attract...
PPS-Although, it is kind of fun to have a motor blow up. At least you have a good story to tell later.
PPS-Leaving the cap off is not a big deal. It's messy and hard to clean up, but it won't kill a motor unless you squirt out practically ALL of the oil. I left mine off, and boy, did I feel stupid.

yeah dog jus change the oil and do the compression test
if that dont tell you whats wrong hell with it drop in a b16!!!

ps i think almost every one that work on their own car
has left the oil cap off at least once or twice!!!:D

i work on my car, ive never taken my car to a mechanic. i also sometimes work on other peoples cars just to make alittle money. ive never forgot to put the oil cap on. lol damn im good

civickiller: it sort of hapens when you have a massively oil burning car.. it sort of becomes a routine to open the hood and add oil every day. You get robotic about and space things off and then the oil cap gets left off :(

Problem SI-
That is one of the funniest stories I've ever read here!
I drove my mom's Buick Riviera Diesel in Colorado, and I could rev it up and leave a whole intersection in black smoke, all the way up to the stoplights!
Flunky
PS-I love imagining the chick with the soot on her face. Guess they didn't know what they were messing with.

My brother forgot to put my oil cap on mine one time and i drove almost 40 miles home and didn't know until i got out of my car and oil was all over my front bumper.

I've also put too much oil in my car because I was in a hurry and didn't check the level. My fiancee was behind me in her car and the smoke was so thick she almost went off the road. You may have put too much oil and additives in.

Im gonna start off by saying I dont want the si motor, sorry, but if have to throw a d series engine in there temporarily it'll be the zc, so at least Ill have a little extra power and only 35K miles.

secondly I would've checked the oil level but i cant now. When i pull out my dipstick oil is like nearly half way up the stick, i guess do to the cap being off or some shit, cuz it's been like that since b4 adding the additives. I do plan on changin the oil sometime in the next week, hopefully next Wed, cuz i have off then, so i guess ill just have to wait and see for now.

PS Glad im not the only one whose forgot to put the cap on twice, i feel better now.....least until i think about my car again lol.

i left the oil cap off my old CRX when a hurricane hit, and after it was gone, i tried to go start her up and it didnt heh, that was the only time that happened heh.

my 90 civic is a stock motor with 200k and it smokes, i swear every week when i pull up to get gas im putting in oil too haha, qrt a week easy

but im about to get my b16, and should have it in this summer, cant wait

when i sit idle, and rev up, there is black powder where my tailpipe is, and the back of my car gets really dirty from it too heh
