Those of us living in the UK would have seen Top Gear last night. Murray walker made the case for the mclaren f1 as the greatest road car ever. What i want to know is, what car was murray driving? It was a standard car with a high downforce kit. It was black with a red stripe and was most likely in britain. Any ideas?
I would also like to know who the professional, showing Murray how the car should be driven, was. He looked very familar, but i couldn't put a name to the face. Perhaps he's the owner?

Sounds like #002 based on the color, the red stripe and the high downforce kit. The car is actually dark grey btw.

I don't know the owner's name, but I believe he's active in the racing community. The car was recently seen at the Spa Ferrari Days in Belgium.

The guy driving was Duncan Hill. He is the senior customer care engineer at Mclaren Automotive as it is now known. Incidently to answer a question about xp5, it has just been completely restored and will be going on show in the park lane show room before being placed in the museum at the Mclaren Technology Centre. The car looks stunning!

cool, you seem to know a lot so can you answer these questions:

1) MUSEUM!!!!!!!<<!!!!!!!! will it be open to the public

2) what if someone wants to test their car, i thought xp5 was their press car

Peloton25

There done with the business of selling and marketing the cars - they won't be loaning XP5 out anymore. In fact, really only AutoCar was given access to XP5 for a complete road test, most of the other magazines got supervised drives or just a ride in the car with Jonathan Palmer doing the driving.

XP5 will be at Park Lane for a while then it will be confined to the museum at Paragon for the rest of its life along with XP1LM. If anything will be in the park lane showroom it will be an SLR. Unfortunately the F1 has had its day as far as marketing goes. All efforts are focused on the SLR. The SLR takes more from the MP-17 than the F1.

what's gonna happen to #065?
i presume it's going to be sold by David Clark, so probably a public sale through Taylor and Crawley. Which means, you can visit the car.
Which means: I'm going to London.

Sorry to bring this back to the top but I just talked to a guy who saw a Koenigsegg in london and he says the silver car in the Park Lane showroom is now been changed for a dark car, I assume this would be XP5? and whats happening with the silver one?

The car in the showroom is indeed XP5. The silver car 065 is back in the workshop to undergo a rebuild and then will be sold. It only has delivery miles on it and is unregistered so offers around £1m are expected.

This is a little off topic but I gotta ask,

McMercSLR, I assume the screen name comes from "McLaren Mercedes SLR"? is that the official name for the car now? I heard that Mercedes would rather people call the car the "Mercedes SLR McLaren" which one is correct?

it's a Mercedes built by Mclaren.

from Mercedes web-site : " Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren "

McMercSLR
08-02-2003, 10:45 AM
it is indeed Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. But dont be fooled, its a Mclaren designed car. When the car is launched in september you will all be able to see just how much Mclaren engineering has gone into it. The monocoque and the rest of the chassis really is a work of art.

Thought I would drag this old topic back to the top to announce the owner's name of the F1 that started this thread. The black one with the red stripe and high downforce kit (#002) shown in the Top Gear episode is owned by a Brit named Tony Smith. As I stated when the thread was new, he is active in the vintage Ferrari racing community in Europe. I'm not positive that he is the original owner, but he should still be the current one. The info I'm drawing from is about 1 yr old now.

I'll post a few pics of the car later to refresh people's memory.

BTW: I see now after reading through this thread where we got the speculation that an SLR might be displayed in McLaren's London showroom. I wonder what ever happened to the guy who was providing that info - looking back at it everything he said, he was dead accurate.

....and so the bad news is that this car is not chassis #002 as has always been suspected. :uhoh:

I found out from the same source who confirmed the owner's name that this is actually chassis #020 and was originally painted blue prior to the refit with the High Downforce Kit. He wasn't able to confirm that Tony has always owned the car, so I can't be certain if the kit was added on a change of ownership. Maybe someone else here can address that?

Anyway, this info came as a bit of a surprise to me given how close this car appears to the original look of chassis #002. I trust the source I got this info from that he wouldn't lead me astray so if you're keeping track it's time to update the records on this one and I apologize for the misinformation earlier.

I thought about that initially, but because he had listed the price in Euros, I figured the dealership would have been from from Europe. Silly me.... :banghead: :grinno:

When I read that part about the photos always being in the same spot, I knew it too.

Here's #072, and the dealership as was mentioned and can be seen, is Motorcars International:

Hello,

Do you have pics of #002 please ?

Thanks
Phil

Peloton25
06-16-2004, 12:13 PM
I don't have any photos that can be confirmed as #002 with it wearing a plate. The photos I do have are scans from the Autocar book on the F1 road car, and they were taken shortly after the car was built in 1993. Whether it still looks the same is hard to know.

I can tell you that the car in those old shots looks almost exactly the same as the car we thought was #002, however it lacks the high downforce kit, since that had not even been thought about at that time.

As for that registration plate, a "W" plate seems kind of odd to me. Unless the car was replated at some point, I think #002 (assuming it wears British plates) should have an "M" plate on it.

Anyway, I take it you have a photo of this 'W35I HPM' car, so feel free to post it when you get a chance. We can pick it apart from there.
