Steering Problem

Ok, I've been through the old posts trying to find what is causing my steering problem. At moderate to freeway speeds there is a bump in the steering that feels like I've just lost traction on the front end. The suburban has 180000 miles on it.
What I've done. I picked up a new steering position sensor. I tried to replace the old one and found that it is nothing more than a plastic disk with no wires. I haven't taken it out yet, but I can't feel any wires coming out of it. Evidently mine is not a high enough trim level to require this part.
So, since the bump always seems to hit when I am just starting to push the burban around a corner a little fast I am wondering if instead this could be a bad steering gear box? I tried tightening it up to take some of the backlash out, but this seems to have no positive and possibly some negative effect on the steering.
Any ideas to help with this? Thanks in advance!

Never mind. I checked it again out of desperation and found the wires are really well hidden. Changed the sensor and it works fine now.
