the ultimate e30

I'm getting a 1991 318is and want to make it "the ultimate driving machine!!" I only have about $400-$500 to spend and I'd rather not go with the supercharger, or the turbo. If i dont have to, i'd rather not waste money on rims, unless it would drastically improve the performance of the car. Is there any advice you guys have to fulfill my dreams? sites would be nice too. Thanks
