After a lot of reading (here on the board/on the net) and a lot of time and $$$ spent here are a few progress pics of the project I'm currently working on. It's a 1/12 th scale "Williams 14B" F1. The engine is not quite complete yet but will be in a few days. I am new to the hobby and still have tons to learn.

Very nice.  Good to see someone else doing F1 models, I was beginning to think I was the only one. ;) Working on a Viper at the moment, but I mostly do F1. Before this Viper I made the 1/24 Tamiya Braun Tyrrell Honda 020 which was my first Tamiya F1 after 3 Revell F1's.

Thanks for the kind words everyone.
Looks great, but the exaust manifold looks abit artificial. Why?
Integra818....The manifolds you're referring to is on the Jordon F1 that I was working on until I destroyed the shell. I followed the Tamiya color code, mixed the paints, and that's the color I got. The 1/12 th scale exhaust manifolds will look much better when I get done with it.
The engine looks amazing !! how much did you paid for the kit ??
Thesaint111.....I purchased it on Ebay. The total cost shipped to California from Canada was $90. By the way, the Enzo is looking sweet!!! That is probably going to be the next kit I purchase. I may have to pm you for some building tips :D.

Nice looking engine JC.
The FW14B is one of the classic F1 designs, good luck with the rest of the build. Wish I had the space to build some of the large scale, early nineties Tamiy F1s. Was a great era of the sport.
Do you have any Camel decals for it yet?
Oh and in future coould you increase the compression on the pictures to decreas the file size. Some of us poor saps are still on dial-up.

New to the hobby?
Huudo.....I've done a few kits when I was around 12 yrs old but you know how that goes. I'm now 29 and have a lot more patience for the hobby and I truly believe it is a key factor in producing a nice end product (patience in prep work, etc). The engine took me almost a week and countless hours of work but I am very pleased with how it turned out.

RallyRaider....I wasn't aware that they had Camel decals for this kit. I would be interested to know where I can get some.Oh and in future coould you increase the compression on the pictures to decreas the file size. Some of us poor saps are still on dial-up.
No problem....just reduced the current pics by around 60%....hope it loads faster for you.

Some aftermarket companies most certinaly do make the politically incorrect decals that the big companies try to save us from. I've got some by Ragged Edge, bought them from Modelcrafts and Hobbies, an online store in New Zealand. Their URL is http://www.modelcraftsandhobbies.co.nz/. Just do a search for "camel fw14b" and you should be in business. The NZ dollar is low and so is international shipping from NZ.
Another alternative since you are in the US would be www.F1specialties.com. Be warned that your credit card could take a major hit if you dare to brouse through their web site.

After many hours of "enjoyable labor" here are a some progress pics. During the build, I made some "rookie mistakes" but thank god it was either not very noticeable or repairable. I've reduced the size of the pics so it will load faster for those who have low bandwidth connections.
Here's the cowling and the front portion of the F1 masked and ready to paint. This was my first attempt at masking and to tell you the truth...I was scared to spray :p.

Here's a pic of the cowling all done painting. I was shocked with the results and can not be happier....thank god for Tamiya masking tape!

Well, this is an updated engine pic. As yo can see, I've added the rear suspension arms, brakes, and a couple of little things.

Finally, the last pic for now of the front and engine placed together (didn't screw on yet).

By the way, much thanks to all those people that was kind enough to help answer my questions about the hobby....I don't think I would have gotten the results that I did without their help.

WHOA!!! Halt, desist, and be sure not to spend any money just yet!
All Tamiya 1/12 scale kits are like that, this much is true. But you'll get hosed for cash if you think 1/12 scale automatically guarantees detail. The Monogram 1/12 scale '57 Chevy, '69 Camaro Z-28, and '67 Corvette Stingray 427 Coupe have little more detail than their 1/25th scale counterparts. (In fact, the '57 is horrendously inaccurate in its hindquarters)
Doyushas are okay, from what I understand, as are the Fujimi Skylines. There's also some intricate resin and white metal kits (such as from Museum Collection) that are even more detailed than the Tamiyas, but cost about as much as many peoples' cars.
I don't want anyone getting burned out of a bunch of cash. That's a surefire way to lose hobbyists.

It's hard to believe you are a newbie. I mean just look at the body, the paint is so shiny and masking is very sharp. I saw it on the thread where you recommended the polish and I thought it was done by a master! I only hope I can have the skills like you. Not only the body is nice but every other part is nice too such as the engine, suspension, cockpit and even the steering wheel. hope to see the complete car. great job!

I agree, the build is great and fun to watch it evolve, but the williams team back then used a much darker "royal" blue imho, did you use the tamiya blue spray paint color recommended in the instruction manual???

I think the cars that predated the FW13 wore the darker blue, then there was a change. :)

Bangai-o.....The blue for this kit is Tamiya's TS-44 "Brilliant Blue." The paint on the car matches very well with the blue decals that come with the kit (not using since I sprayed the blue). It's probably just a bit darker then what is shown in the pics....must be the flash on the digital camera.
It's hard to believe you are a newbie.
Junhao.....Like I've mentioned on another post I've done a few kits as a kid (just glued and brushed painted stuff on). I did a lot of reading and gained a lot of knowledge off various websites on the web and definitely from the FAQ and the people on this message board. My "polishing" post was done on my little brothers junk car. I was just messing around and I very surprised with the results that I got.
you're definitely enjoying to building this big Williams! I can feel it from your pics.
Kunta....yes, I am loving it....even more so now when I am seeing this kit come to life!
I have the same resparator, but havent used it.. HOW IS IT!
Integra14.....The respirator works very well for acrylics but not as well for Tamiya's TS/spray line but it still reduces the fumes quite a lot. Along with the respirator and painting in a well ventilated area I think I am safe.
By the way, I should have the final "completed" pics up hopefully by Sat. or Sun.
