I was at Wal-Mart today, and was searching for things that could be used to detail some models I'm working on. Mainly engine stuff (wires, hoses, etc.) I got 10 feet of Silver Thread (which looks almost exactly like braided lines in racecars or performance cars) and it was $1.94 for 10 feet. When I went to the hobby store, they had the EXACT same thing, 2 feet of it, for $2.95. Now I'm wondering......

What are some other things that are really cheap, but make good detail parts when painted or decaled? I'm sure there are some stuff that is supposed to be used for another purpose (electrical wires or something).

Any Ideas?

I also just wanted to brag about getting 10 feet of something for $1.94 when the same thing was $2.95 for 2 feet. :D

EDIT - I also want to point out that they had baggied up, 8 little strands of thread, labeled "V-8 Plug Wires". Which looked like nothing more than red thread in a bag, also for $2.95. ::hrmm:: :confused: LOL, I'll raid my grandma's sewing machine before I do that.

you can take the metal off a floppy disk and make it into stuff. like cut and drill ignition wire looms.

Welcome to AF, nice to see some one from NC on here:wave:

i use mosiquito (spelling?) netting for making mesh grills, you can get a huge role of this at wal mart for about $3, enough for more than a 1,000,000 cars, at least, and $3 for the stuff at a hobby shop isnt enough for more than a few cars.

other than that, thats all that i know of, ive heard that wiring like in TVs, Radios, VCRs, etc.... makes good wiring for engines, but i have never tried this.

I just thought of this....

Would this be feasible? To make a mock coilover, couldn't you use a coarse thread screw and cut the ends off? Paint it, and mount it?

::shrug::

.I just thought of this....

I just put real coilovers on my Impreza

Here (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/t102342.html)

Using 1mm tubing, wire that fits inside and spring from a miniz, although a chopped pen spring would do it.

A long job that requires lots of patience and carefull sectioning of the kit parts but looks real nice when done (and cheap!!)

I read the link in the 'How to Super Detail Your Model' in the FAQ, but it really wasn't too helpful.

Are there any others?

EDIT - I read that thread Before I posted this one. :)
