Here's some pics of my dash fiberglassed, I didn't paint it base clear because I figured everyone is doing it so I'd be different and make it nice and clean looking

heres the other side, I know I have red seats but not for long I'm redoing them, they're Tenzo R's but I'm covering them to match the rest of the interior

No I covered the dash with fiberglass resin, then sanded it smooth and painted it. I also shaved the side vents on the top. Theres a lot more to it than that but that's the simple version.

those pics don't seem to do it justice. get some close ups in better lighting, i wanna see how smooth and shiny that thing is
zippeay
05-12-2003, 07:13 PM
Its not shiny, I painted it with flat paint so it would match the rest of the vinyl in my car, I'll try and take some more pics when I get a chance

i've been asking around if that was possible and got no response. do you think you could post the process in detail, and pics if possible. that would really help me out.

Well I'm doing a friends MK4 jetta dash right now so I'll try and take pics if I remember but its mostly done already so it won't be like a step by step. Here I'll tell you real quick
Take the dash out of the car and take all the guages and vents and stuff out
Clean it real good with wax and grease remover
sand it really good with 180 grit sand paper
Take a milk jug and cut the bottom off it so you can use it to pour the fiberglass resin all over the dash
Keep putting coats of resin until its hard enough that it won't flex when you push on the dash
Sand the resin smooth and any imperfections fill in with bondo or light weight filler
Prime with high build primer and sand with 400 grit and paint
Got it??? Its not that hard just really time consuming
O and you have to either sand or get a dremel and route out all the holes where the vents and gauges go so they will fit right
Have fun its not easy though and it takes a lot of time, good luck

One more thing you probably need at least 4 -5 coats if not more to make it hard enough so it won't crack

It looks good. How many hours did it take?
zippeay
05-13-2003, 11:12 PM
I'm not really sure I worked on it on and off the whole thing took 3 weeks but that's because I'm doing a million other things at the same time. I'm guessing probably 15 hours mabey more??? Thanks I'm glad most of you like it, I was kinda worried that no one would like it because most people like the whole shiny fiberglass look. I too like that but just trying to be a little different thats all:D

i was thinkin bout doing that to my trunk to make it flat and smooth, instead of the ridgey bumps all in it, cus im doing a custom trunk soon. Looks good tho. You take yer dash out ? or just did it all in your car ?
zippeay
05-30-2003, 01:41 PM
you have to take it out, It would be almost impossible to do it in the car, I mean I guess you could but it would probably look like crap

zippeay, do u think it would work better once I got my dash outta the car to vinyal wrap it and use that 3m adhesive stuff, sand, prime and paint it, or try the fiberglass route like you did? I mean, vinyal would look tight, but I heard the dash is hella hard to do, like much harder than doors, etc. I am willin to give any of them a try, i just gotta figure what I am doing to what part so I can plan and match it up.

Yes its much harder than a door panel because theres a lot of curves and contours. You probably won't be able to cover it with one piece of vinyl, you'll have to sew some pieces together. If you want your dash done in vinyl I suggest taking it somewhere, if you take the dash out and everything they shouldn't charge you a whole lot mabey $100 bucks or so.

LOL, you dick Julian. Don't pay attention to him he's just this gay guy I work with, hehe. He's got a really lame RX7 if he ever gets it out of the shop:biggrin2: Shoot I wouldn't do anyone's dash for less than $400 and I know most people wouldn't pay that or can't pay it. Its a lot of work. So here you guy flygayguy :thefinger

YUP, my friend has a 99 blazer and he did his dash 2 years ago and hasn't had a problem yet. I just painted his truck here are pics of it, I also painted the go-cart too. http://www.imagestation.com/album/?id=4289890789&signin_cookie_sent=1

now just to make sure, you just apply 4-5 coats of resin right on to the dash. no priming, no sanding, just nice even applications? then prime and paint.
zippeay
07-06-2003, 12:38 AM
No sand your whole dash with 100 grit real good then wipe it off with wax and grease remover. Then start pouring the resin, don't worry about runs and stuff until your done with the last coat because its a waste of time you'll always get runs. After you put the last coat on sand it smooth and prime it with high build primer then sand again and paint :bigthumb:

did you pour the fiberglass resin over the original dash and then put it back in the car....or did you make a mold and replace the whole dash..

07-21-2003, 05:21 AM
He took the dash out of the car and poured resin over the whole dash, sanded it smooth, and painted it. He said that on page one somewhere, if you want to go back and read over it yourself. Oh yea, he said he only ised resin, he didn't lay down fiberglass cloth or anything.
