Starter difference 1st and 2nd production?

I'm needing to replace the starter on my 97 Xsport SOHC(E). Looking at rockauto.com, I see different parts for first and second production. How am I suppose to know which I have? Is it just the type of terminals on the solenoid? And if I buy the wrong one, will an adapter work?
