clutch or tranny?

I have a 2002 cavalier with a 2.2 ecotec engine. When I down shift slowing down, I get a grind in every gear. If I hold in the clutch and coast for a sec it will go into gear. Also if I'm sitting in neutral and try to go straight to 1st it wont go in and I have to push it into second to get it to go in. Is this a cluch or tranny issue?

Either the clutch is not releasing fully or the synchros in the trans are worn. Changing trans oil regularly is important, especially if you downshift routinely and beat on the synchro rings in the process (inevitable with higher speed downshifting).
You can try to change oil now if you haven't done so regularly, but it may not help. Also, don't even think about using any of that Lucas schitt in the trans oil. GM Synchomesh oil ONLY. No matter what the pizza delivery guy or parts counter guy tries to tell you, unless you consult with a tribologist and get written approval, don't even think about it.
You can also verify if the clutch is dragging by raising the front end and selecting a gear range with the clutch held disengaged to see if the wheels still try to drive (engine running, of course).

I agree with the above, You'll want to check the release you may only have a master or slave problem, check your master fluid also.
You are also like 9 years on the clutch so the pressure plate is probably getting weak and worn so your fingers can be an issue also.
