Rear wheel play

I've got a 2001 Bravada with 136,000 miles on it. I just got done replacing both rear wheel bearings & seals because i had play in the right rear wheel & it was clunking bad. While i'm waiting for the new diff. cover to show up i put the rotors, calipers & wheels back on. Checked to see if i had play in the rear wheels & guess what, still doing it just as bad. axle shafts are ok & it's only the right side. Had my son wiggle the wheel while i was uner the car & looks like the play is coming from the area where the C clips go in the middle of the diff. Not sure what this means.

How much end play?
Is both sides the same on end play?
Are c clamps worm?

Did you have up and down play or just end play to start with?
Was axel bearings bad or signs of wear?
What kind of clunking?

just up & down play, kind of like you'd have with a bad bearing. Bearing was fine & axle looks just fine. The clunking is made when i shake the wheel like you would to check the bearings. C clips look fine. If you take a small straight slot screwdriver & put it next to the C clip the axle sits tight. Going to try switching axles & see what happens.

Well i feel like an ass ;) when i put the axles back in i put the rotors on & then the wheels on, after that i checked the wheels for play & there was. THEN i took off the wheels, put the brakes back on & then the wheels. SURE enough no play in the one side & just a hair on the other side. Probably if i replace the C clips that'll get rid of any slight play. This is why i've been a shade tree mechanic for the past 20 years LOL!!!

With brakes on or off should not change end play.
Just the feel of it.
The c clip and end of axle and fit to spider pin controls end play.
That set up almost always will have some end play.
Just make sure clips are in good and no wear there.

You did not tell us if the bearing was bad that you replaced or did you just replace it to get rid of end play?
